I was just thinking today how funny it is that of all the people I've 'talked' to on the internet, you all seem the most smart (intelligent, critical thinkers, well written, insightful). It got me wondering if us alcoholics may just be plain smarter in general. Dumb w/alcohol, but smart otherwise. LOL When you think about it, you do have to be pretty smart to be able to successfully hide an alcohol problem for a long time. Not that this is a good thing. Anyway, just a rambling thought for a sober Friday night...

Adagirl, I do know the rate of people with mental disorders have a very high rate of alcohol and drug abuse. That is pretty obvious. Anyway, a lot of people I know that have these disorders are surprisingly intelligent. Don't know what the connection is, but it is just my personal experience. Like the tortured artist thing. Or the tortured genius thing. I'm saying that, because I noticed many members suffer from depression, anxiety, hyperactivity, bipolar, etc. etc.

Or, it just appears that way because we were smart enough to come here because we are smart enough to realize we're killing ourselves?

I can't, for the life of me, remember why I know that, but I swear it is a reliable piece of information. Rehab. perhaps?

We are also creative, more than the average Joe.

So true. I 've read many biographies of our heroes who have indulged. Churchill comes to mind when an admirer said that he always had SOME alcohol in his system. It varied as to the amount, but I don't think he ever detoxed completely in his life.

I`ve never read any studies on the subject, but to your, "alcoholics may be just plain smarter in general", I feel inclined to agree.............O.K., I`m biased!!!! LOL
