    Anyone doing Atkins Diet?

    Hi folks:

Another post in General for me.

My fitness program is going well, and I have a real good rush of motivation here lately. As I have written in long-term, things seem to be on a real ramp up here lately. A lot of things coming together, and feeling real good.

So, I ran almost 4 miles last Saturday, and I now have resolved to get to 6 miles (a 10K) by the end of this year. I'm convinced that I need to now lose 15 to 20 lbs of weight in order to do this, because I can really feel it's effects after 2 or 3 miles going up those hills.

An email friend from another forum, has successfully lost almost 40 lbs since last May by doing Atkins program. She has tried exercise alone, and did not get much success. I know at least 5 other people who have had great success with the Atkins method as well.

So I am preparing for the induction phase of Atkins to lose my gut anchor. My BMI is almost at 25, so I'm not overweight, but I want to get down to 23 or 22 to get into better running shape.

Anyone here with experience and/or success by doing Atkins??

    Neil

It really works if you don't cheat, Neil. I prefer the South Beach Diet though. They're pretty similar. (I have some experience with cheating .)

      Good luck!

No doubt it works. But, I like to eat high protein, low carbs, and low fat. I've known people that did the Atkins which is zero to low carbs, protein and fat. I don't like that idea. The main idea is to cut down on carbs. Trust me, this works. I do workout a good bit, so I get my carbs for energy. You can't get enough protein. What you don't use, your body will get rid of. It's not like fats or carbs. Any of that crap you put in your body is either gonna get used, or hang off your gut. Problem is, carbs and fat are so damn tasty. Good luck with finding what works for you. It's not easy to stay away from mashed potatoes (my favorite) and stuffing. But, just fill up on protein, work out, and stay weary of the carbs, especially the bad carbs.(candy, ice cream, etc.)
        where does this go?

Neil, I did Atkins a few years back and lost 30 pounds in about 4 months. I was very strict and went by the book. I also found Diet Plans and Weight Loss Programs: Mediterranean Diet, GI Diet, Atkins Low Carb Diet, Slim Fast, Bob Greene that does the meal plan for you. Unfortunately I got pregnant again...so now I am gearing up for Atkins again. It worked wonders for me. Good luck. Also the Atkins website is great, they have a support group there too.

Let me say that I love my kids....just not the weight...geez that sounded bad when I re-read it.

I think it works if you stick to it but it sounds unhealthy to me. and if you go back to another diet you will probably just gain the weight back.

Pick a diet that you can stick to long-term. south beach is very good, a lot more sensible than Atkins but similar in some ways.

don't cut out carbs altogether, cut them down significantly and only eat whole wheat and brown flour. Stabilize your blood sugar. Don't be dissatisfied with losing weight slowlly.

                Thanks for the inputs.

I figure that over the last few years, I've been gobbling 300 to 400 grams of carbohydrates a day. Lots of fruit juice, bread, pasta, corn, starchy vegetables like potatoes and what not.

So my plan is to do the induction for just the two weeks as recommended, and then start at 100 grams/day of carbohydrates after that. With the workout levels, and activity as of late, getting down 15 to 20 pounds in four to five months should be entirely possible I would think.

It will be no sacrifice to cut the pure sugary stuff, but that also means cutting my Gatorade out, along with the soda pop. I will probably cheat with a Snickers bar on the weekends, and I know it.

It's not like I'm trying to knock off 50 to 100 lbs in six months, but I've seen a couple of others do that when going full bore 25 grams carbs a day or less. I probably burned over 600 calories on just that run Saturday (195 lb. man, run 5 mph, for 50 minutes=624 calories) At 4 calories per gram of carbs, that comes to 156 grams of carbs burned. At 9 calories per gram of fat, that comes to 69 grams of fat burned if I was in ketosis.

Anyway, I'm trying to be reasonable here, and not get deprived of some goodies, but really need to do something to increase my perfomance.

                Neil

be careful with the atkins, it is not good for you if you are doing a lot of cardio ( running) you can get a sort of protien poisoning too, so monitor oyur intake of protien and ensure you dont make up for the lack of carns with way too much protien. I think a much better model is to simply eat the right carbs, like who grain breads and pasta, as opposed to cutting them out. Good luck!

I really think you should read the South Beach diet book. For two weeks you clear out your diet. For those weeks, no sugar, no fruit, no alcohol, no grains. You lose a lot of weight. It's a mostly protein and vegetable diet just in the first stage and you lose your cravings for crappy food.

Then after two weeks, you have fruit again and you gradually reintroduce carbs but they have to be complex carbs, good carbs.

Does atkins still allow you to eat lots of fatty food as long as no carbs? I don't think it is healthy.

As Java said there is a big difference between 100% whole grains and white bread. Also, if your diet is mostly carbs, you should change it. A diet of sugary drinks and white breads/other carbs is like a sugar diet. It all goes straight to your bloodstream.

One thing to bear in mind... I read a book that suggested that people who crave carbs are sometimes deficient in serotonin. eating carbs makes it easier for tryptophan, amino acid, to get to the brain. no competition from other a acids. Tryptophan makes serotonin and no doubt you know what serotonin is in terms of depression. That's why some foods make you feel good. Anyway, the author suggests for people who crave carbs to have whole grain snacks (100% whole grain crackers)... So consider your moods in all this too, whether you have depression.

Atkins for the 2 week induction is fine. You actually feel a lot better too and it sounds like you are educating yourself before starting which is very smart. Good luck.

i love the atkins diet. it helps the lean muscles. but if you are not careful and eat more meat than the leafy green? you get dog breath, even if you brush and floss.

Yea, I've been doing a lot of calculations on my current metabolic rate, exercise and activity level. Muscle mass, body fat%, and other factors.

I got the two books, Atkins New Diet Revolution and Atkins for Life, and have gone through about half of each book. I'm planning right now, and will get that South Beach book as well to see how it compares.

This is just a progression of my overall program to get AF forever. I am already planning for my 2 year anniversary AF this December. The point being that I consider this to be an important part of my long term recovery at this point. I'm to the point now, where I want to address other things, and go beyond the base work of struggling with psychological issues all the time. It was all I could muster just to stay AF the first year. I definitely underwent another transition at the 1 1/2 year point, and this is no time to let up for sure.

                            Anyone doing Atkins Diet?

                            Hey Neil,
There are a few boards that support Low Carb eating - lowcarbfriends.org and if you google, then I think you will find the other. Both are great boards where you would be able to pose questions of serious athletes who have tweaked Atkins (not that you haven't gotten good advice already from previous posters!). I need to lose weight also. Sorry to say that I am not anywhere near where you are in terms of fitness. I used to walk about 6 miles a day, but the important limiter there is USED TO - and now I have a bum knee!

My interest in Low Carb (Atkins) was brought about due to insulin resistance issues. It can be a healthy food plan, or an unhealthy one - which is why it has gotten a bad rap in some circles. Many of the folks that faithfully were doing Atkins found they needed to up their healthy carbs for the days they were doing runs. That might be something to think about ... if you hit the wall sooner.

                            RUN ON NEIL ...
                            Hugs,
                            Pansy
