Water Restrictions - Calling All Aussies!

Alright. Back again and reverting to Bluebell's first post.

Just watching the news tonight and in Queensland, (Wattle area) apparently a year's rainfall has just bucketed down in the last 24 hrs. The Sunshine Coast was blasted with 800mm of the wet stuff.

      Hope Wattle is ok.

Water Restrictions - Calling All Aussies!

Just weighing in to buoy up the Aussie contingency ... Only joined last night ...

We're on level one, so a lot better off than the rest of the country, but it's a problem ... Got to consider where the hell we'd be without water ...

Great to see such an international spread on these boards.

            Hi Kyna,

Just ignore any rumours that I'm as mad as a cut snake. Just your average ex drunk public servant working for the Australian people here in Canberra. Any policies you'd like written? health, education, immigration, agriculture, industry, foreign affairs perhaps? I know, I'll write some water restriction policies! hee hee

Water Restrictions - Calling All Aussies!

              Hey all,

I think the US could learn a lot by watching what is going on in Oz. In order to learn more about my friends on the site, I read Bill Bryson's "In a Sunburned Country." It was really good, although I expect that you folks who actually live in Oz would have a few things to say about his take.

I am lucky to live in a part of the US where water is not so much of an issue, although we have had a baby drought im my state. We are only on alternate day watering schedule - but we certainly do not have all the degrees of drought alerts that you guys have. Nothing to compare to what you folks have been through.

I think it is a great idea to use the water from the tub or the sink to water your plants (I cannot grow veggies - no garden in condo land). It seems like that would be a very wise thing to do, otherwise the water would go to waste? Bluebell, you could really get in trouble for doing that?

I have stopped using my dishwasher and am wondering about Velvet soap, Tawny.

Oh, and Flip - please create a very high position for me in the education department. Maybe minister of education - that would do nicely. It is the least you can do as I nominated you Queen of the Southern Hemisphere.

              Anyone heard from Rags?

              Bye now, hugs ...

If Australia had more vegetarians, Australia would have more water. The book Diet for a Small Planet will support this statement.

Water Restrictions - Calling All Aussies!

                  Hey my Aussie friends!

Blue I am so sorry about your garden and the water situation in general over there.

I lived in the VI for 15 years. Water in a cistern, we were very, very careful. Lots of cold showers, get in turn on ice cold water, get wet, turn it off. Get sudsy go from there and then rinse quickly. I even got where I could do it in one gallon of water. Of course, we saved as Tawny mentioned every drop from the house too for our gardens.

I moved to New Mexico and can not believe another 15 years later that people still turn the faucet on and let it run continuously . . . all that water down the drain, I go around and turn faucets off at my mom's and my in laws. I find it amazing the lack of water saving thoughts with residents here. I still get my toothbrush wet and turn the faucet back off, then turn it back on again to rinse. . . these are not that hard of concepts to put into practice.

It is good to be green no matter where you live!! Here here to all my green friends!!
                  Hugs to all of you,
                  Mary

Water Restrictions - Calling All Aussies!

Guys, you are all wonderfully nuts!!! I really enjoyed the read.... Came to this thread coz, having had the wettest summer since records began, I think the UK's water restrictions have just been lifted!!! Grrrr! Not that I want to use a hose pipe - I don't have a single veggy that isnt black and rotting from the rain and cold!!! :upset: Forget even green tomato chutney - black tomato chutney anyone???

                    But I'm really
sorry you guys are having a tough time - it's not funny at all...not too many fires I hope??

Best way to learn about water useage is to sail on a small yacht I think....it's amazing what you learn to do to save it when it's such a chore to wash in salt water when you run out or are at sea for a long time etc...!

We have water taxes (rates) in the UK which I don't think you guys do? I pay ?680 sterling a year for a small 3 bedroomed house in town.... would fit on your deck!!! Highest taxes for water in the UK! Hum! We're paying to clean up years of sewage all around the coastline I gather... great. It's not there now (Surfers Against Sewage = good'uns) but we're still paying. (My aunt has a humugous 6 bedroomed house further north and pays ?250 p.a.!!! No coastline to her county...)

I'll leave you Aussies to your kip now.... Do I count a little bit?; my grandmother was born in Toowoomba, Queensland.....? Thanks for letting me visit and have such a larf!!! :H

                    Love

Water Restrictions - Calling All Aussies!

We pay for the water we use, through water rates. A bit like council rates. However after we have reached the "allocated" amount we pay a much higher water usage rate. In Canberra, where I live, this is going up at an incredible rate, in part because - get this - we've been so good at cutting our consumption that the water company is going broke and can't run at a profit, so they are charging us more.

Thank you for your input Lucky. Very helpful. I'll suggest it next time parliament sits.

I wonder what % of the USA has to pay for water usage? I do and have for years. I really think all people should pay for water just to create awareness of it being a resource.

By accepting that you are an Aussie, you will now have to put us up if we ever come to cornwall for a visit - Isn't it funny, my great grandmother was from Cornwall! lol
