    Initial weight loss AF??

Can anyone share their experience of weight loss when they first went AF?

This is day 20 for me (unbelievably) and losing a bit of weight was a bonus I was really looking forward to. I'm eating good, healthy stuff but I haven't lost a single pound:upset: I am indulging in chocolate (Lushy said I could ) but only about 4 squares a day and I'm eating less at each meal because I've lost that booze-munchies thing. I must have been knocking back at least 500-600 calories a day from alcohol, if not more.......so why ain't I shifting on the scales?????:upset:
Just hand me the chocolate and.........I'll consider my position. My solicitor has advised me to say no more than that.

I think it varies for some people. Some people lose a lot when they quit and others hardly drop a pound. I still endorse you having a little chocolate every day. Are you exercising? And who knows, it could all hit and once and one day you will wake up and five pounds will be gone. Some quicker incentive would sure be nice though!

Sorry you are not losing more weight.

So you are eating healthy food. Great

      BUT

are you looking at how much healthy food you are eating? some things, like brown rice, have a lot of calories and you need to look at portion size.
i guess carbs help get serotonin to the brain. so in a sense they are feel good foods. but they can be high in calorie.

Hey, we've been thru the whole chocolate thing-- yeh, it's not such a good idea in an ideal world, but if it keeps you from the booze, ok then.

As for weight, I have gained a bit, but I am healthier and enjoy good food now, so I figure it's worth it. I also heard that it can take some time before you lose weight, as your body takes time to get used to the different way of metabolising. So, I would just concentrate on eating well and balanced meals. Also, as Nancy says, there may be "HEALTHY" foods that are also high in calories.

Phew, this all takes a lot of work, eh? Try to remember to enjoy all the benefits at the same time.

          Hi suze,
I`ve dropped 14 lb in just under 6 wks. The weight isn`t coming off terribly quickly, but that`s fine as am not on a diet as such........more a long-term healthy eating plan to see me reach my ideal weight and be able to maintain it. I found that I pretty much lost my appetite when I quit, but am reminding myself to eat regularly as we need to take very good care of ourselves to repair some of the damage we have incurred due to excessive drinking.

I think Nancy may very well have identified where you`re going wrong, in that you need to be careful of portion sizes and consider low cal alternatives for many of the basics in your diet.

Am also allowing myself a little chocolate every day like yourself.....isn`t hampering my weight loss any, as I believe any diet should include a wee treat to avoid feeling deprived. They say "a little of what you fancy does you good".......so think a good attitude to tackling a weight problem is to allow yourself your favourite foods in moderation. Pity I didn`t manage to adopt the same attitude to wine!!! lol

I am JUST like you! I was looking forward to the weight loss --- and I totally expected it to come off fast since I cut out thousands of calories. I even started walking every day (2 - 3 miles at a quick pace) and the scale wasn't moving! I was making healthy choices and I did control my portions, so what gives???

Anyway, after a few weeks (probably where you are now), the scale did start to move. I did lose 5 lbs over 2 days, and then a few more. I'd say I am nearing 10 now. Would I like it to come off more quickly? Sure!!

In my case, I think the slowness first came from my body going into "starvation mode." It stores everything because it is in shock!! LOL But, once that is over, my other problem is that I am 46. Unfortunately, EVERYTHING slows down at my age!!! Bummer!!

Anyway, you know deep down whether you are doing everything right. So, if that's the case, keep it up and try to be patient. It will happen!! Science says so!! :H

Good work on the 20 days!!!

              Suze,
Make sure that you eat lots and lots of wet foods it you want to lose weight. So that means eat all the fresh fruits and vegetables that are watery that you want. Plus they fill you up fast. Limit dense fruits and veggies like potatoes and bananas. Brown rice is very good for you but you have to watch your portion. Choose brown rice over white rice.
Have lots of vegetable based soups.
In no time your body will adjust to the new healthier foods and the scale will adjust. Sometimes your body just goes into shock.
Good luck and now you have me hungry for soups because Fall is the perfect time to start making them again!

I gained weight. Food tasted better and since I never ate while drinking once I stopped the booze, the munchies began. I'm now on a health kick (exercising, healthy food) and the only thing that's kicking is my foot and the scale's butt. The darn #'s are not going down! UGH.....

Make sure you drink plenty of water, and make sure you are eating ENOUGH, if you are not eating enough calories your body stores what you are getting because it thinks it is starving. Write down everything you eat for a couple of days so you are getting an acurate view of your calorie intake, if you are eating less than 1500 calories you are not eating enough, if you are completely inactive in anyw ay you can go down to 12 or 1300 but I wouldn't reccommend it. If you are active, you should be able to eat between 1600-2500 and still lose wieght depending on how active you are and your current size. Kepp inmind if you weren;t big to begin with, then wieght will come off very slowly.
It's not that some people have willpower and some don't. It's that some people are ready to change and others are not.

I suppose I'm just being impatient *taps foot rapidly*.

                    Good thoughts and advice, everyone...thanks.

I walk my dogs about 4 times a day, but I think I need to get back on the stepper and move the blood around a bit more. I have reduced my portion sizes.....when I went AF I bought myself a lovely bowl....smaller than our usual ones.....and only eat what will fit into it at each meal. I only eat carbs at lunchtime...rice or quinoa....and only a heaped tablespoonful. I don't eat bread or cakes/cookies. I eat loads of veg...no puddings.....I really thought that the 14lbs I'd put on in recent years was the accumulated booze calories. Maybe I was wrong...maybe it's just my age LOL:upset: Oh, OK....pass the wine again, then?...NOOOOOOOO!!!!

It would be nice to see the weight move a bit...it would really help me keep clear of the alcohol...so I'm hoping I'll be like PinkLady and start dropping it soon.

Sorry.... I know this isn't a weight loss site but I need all the incentives I can get, especially as I'm still not sleeping well and am often wiped out with tiredness. On the plus side, though, I am much clearer-headed and really feel good about being sober.

                    Thanks everyone :h

Well considering all the things you are doing, maybe Java is right, maybe you are not eating enough calories?

I hope you see some results soon. weight loss would be a nice side effect from quitting drinking and since you cut out all those calories, it's reasonable to expect weight loss.

Well SlightlyS you are not the only one. I am Day 9 AF and like you thought I would see the results in the first week but nothing. Am eating really healthily, exercising, drinking water etc. Hopefully its like someone said its a metabolism thing. Living in hope!!

How much are you looking to lose, Rustop? I'm 8st 6 lbs (?118lbs) but I am small and definitely a stone over the weight I used to be/should be...and I wasn't skin and bones even then! I know people do say that the less you have to lose, the harder it is to do it but I really did think that dropping all those alcohol calories would show up straight away!

Suze, based on what you are eating and your activities, I am nearly 100% positive you will be losing weight soon. I know it can take time, but this is not a hocus pocus thing. It will happen. Also, I do believe in that "wee treat" Starlight mentions to avoid feeling deprived.

p.s. I am small too, so maybe that's also why I am not losing weight (actually gained, now stable). Still I feel so much better now (except when I try to squeeze into my favourite pair of "loose" jeans, he he.)
