    Musical Preferences/Music for Moods

Music is something I haven't seen discussed a lot on this forum and it is about time I changed that. I myself am a classically trained pianist and was introduced to music at a very early age.
I also worked in recording studio in Liverpool where I started at the bottom being a tape opp. and worked my way up to become the studios main sound engineer. I've done demos in the past for Cast, Space and Ian McCulloch (Echo and the Bunymen) to name but a few and I've helped engineer/mix and produce dozens of others. That part of my life was very hedonistic and I lost the plot more than a few times I can tell you!!. I ended up selling a lot of my own keyboards and samplers a long time ago when I was in need of beer and drugs but I still remember them days being a part of the Liverpool music scene and it is something I will never regret.

Anyway being passionate about all kinds of music I've listed a few of my favourite bands, tunes videos etc that I either simply enjoy listening to or hold some sentimentality. I hope you'll join me in a trip down memory lane with your own lists etc. I do run Limewire on my PC as well so It would be interesting to download some of your suggestions as well.

Phil Collins "One more night" and Wham's "Last christmas" reminds me off splits with girlfriends when I was a teenager!!

All about Eve "Flowers in our hair" reminds me of when I used to spend months on end living at Gwrych Castle in North Wales.

Linkin Park "Breaking the Habit" Great tune and video that I have on my PC that I was listening to a lot when I gave up drink!

I'm glad to see you put Bob Dylan under easy listening. You may yet be able to salvage your image as a hippie (not).

I'll be back to post on this one. But it will take a bit of considering. This stuff is not to be taken lightly, as you well know.

This looks like it could turn into a good long running thread...:thanks:

I'll also admit to having a very hedonistic past... All those years in Colorado, living a carefree gypsi life in a tree-house, and travelling a lot...

I worked as a volunteer DJ for the local radio station in Telluride for about 7 years. It was free format, so we could play what ever suited your mood at the time...Which was always my favorites!

I used to play a LOT (hours) of

      Bonnie Raitt

      Eagles
      Genesis
      Buffalo Springfield

      Jim Croce
      Guess Who
      Kate Wolfe
      Rod Stewart
      Joe Cocker
      Eric Clapton
      Styxx
      Poco
      Firefall
      New Grass Revival
      Allison Krauss
      Maura O'Connel
Chuck Wagon & the Wheels (goofy stuff)
      Garth Brooks

      well there's a start...

I am definitely coming back to this. But just did not want it to get lost in the flotsam and jetsam-- (just kidding about that)... but I'm bumping anyway.

Yes this is a good thread Hippie. The type of music I listen to depends very much on my mood, as I'm sure most people would agree.

My all time favourite album is by Eden...'Everything but the girl.' It has come through the years with me and has so many memories attached to it. It is an album I usually only play when I'm alone. It has to be turned up very loud and I sing to ALL of the words. Every single song on it is fab. In the past, I would put it on after coming home from a night out (when I was drunk) and I remember it playing over and over when I was moving out of our house having split up from a very long relationship. I have sobbed to it, danced to it, cleaned my house to it and more...to it! Its a girls album I suppose and alot of people who have heard it say that Tracey Thorn sounds so depressing but I don't see her like that. I just love the words and have related to them many times.

Its lovely thinking about music that means so very much. there is loads of other stuff but this stands out for me.

I also listen to, Radiohead, Reef, Fun loving criminals, Portishead, The red hot chillies, Paul Weller, James Morrison, James Blunt, and there is one track by mother Earth called 'Jesse' which is great, anyone know it?? Bella xxx

                Musical Preferences/Music for Moods

Hippie, I would have to say that my life has been, and is heavily influenced by music. A musician myself, I enjoy many facets of music. I have played several instruments...starting with the clarinet, flute, sax, guitar...working on the mandolin! I have been a vocalist in a few bands as well.
At times I find my own taste of music a bit strange, depends on the state of mind. I have listed a few musicians I have on my small collection of approx 5,000. Sounds like once an addict always one. Do they have support groups for such a thing??? Wouldn't attend it anyway! So here are a few !!

                Acoustic/pop whatever category
-Patty griffin....Stay on the ride, personal favorite!!
                -Rufus wainright...Cigarettes and Chocolate milk!!
-John Prine...Sam Stone! Emmylou Harris does a great version of this song!
-Dan Fogelberg?? Strange one but I admit one of my favorite..Part of the Plan!!
-Personal friend of mine Ken Dixon... Check him out. his music is on I tunes and a couple of other places, has his own site as well Phanta Morgana!!Very Cool
-Mark Knopfler with Emmylou Harris..pretty much the whole CD!
                -Mindy Smith...Come to Jesus!!
                to many to mention!!!
                Electronic:
                -Fatboy slim...Praise You
                -The Chemical Brothers..Surrender
                -Morcheeba...Part of the process
                -Faithless...we come!
and many more!! I could go on and on
                OK Bluegrass/Country:
                -Peter Rowan...Land of the Navajo!!
                -No speed limit...Bluegrass lullaby!!
-Allison Kraus...Let me touch you for a while!
-Rhonda Vince..I'm just drivin nails in my coffin....everytime I drink a bottle of booze!!
-Dixie Chicks...Top Of the world..written by Patty Griffin
                -Again Many More.
                Rock:
                -Yes...Circus in Heaven
                -Rush....Closer to the heart
                -Coldplay...Square One
                -Annie Lennox....Medusa, The whole CD!!
                -Pink Floyd...Hey You
                -Squeeze...Up the junction!
                -Beck...Think I'm in love!
                -Keane...hopes and fears!!
                -Evanescene..Call me when your sober!!
                -Blue October..x-amount of words!!
                And of course many more
                Classical:
                -Mozart&Brahm...Clarinet quintet!
                -Daniel Barenboim
                -Bach
my classical list is a bit short as most of it was not played by choice...the rebel in me!! I do enjoy listening to it, but I didn't sit still very well therefore I was always in trouble in Symphonic band!!

To be honest I could potentially waste a whole day here!! Some music for thought!!

yeh, Trixie, you're right... Bob Dylan is NOT easy listening, he's "Hippie" listening, lol.

                      And yay Gumby! Rufus rocks.

Sorry, I am not yet ready to spend a couple hours on this thread-- but I'll be back (and don't ask if that's a promise or a threat).

Definitely tending towards the rockier side of easy listening at the moment - as a guitarist - I tend towards guitar based stuff - but have LOTS of more unusual stuff I listen to as well.
