Great thread. Music is HUGE to me, always has been. Listening and playing (guitar, keyboards and singing). My tastes run the gamut: Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Blues, Soul, Funk, Techno, Raggae, Jazz, classical, etc. The only music I'm not fond of is country and lame pop.
Wouldn't know where to begin with a list......on board with everyone's lists so far( and thanks for so many great ipod ideas !).... but here's some random thoughts for fun:

This Past Summer: After seeing an awesome solo show by Chris Cornell, I went on a re-listening journey through his career: Soundgarden, Audioslave (their 1st album is a fav of all time. cool cuts: Set it Off, I am the Highway, Show me how to Live....) and his last solo album. Linkin Park's last album was huge on my ipod this past summer also.

A Recent Discovery: Have a Les Paul maniac friend who is a HUGE Zakk Wylde fan, groupie (and I think they've had gay sex). He's been Ozzie's guitar dude for 20+ years. He's a shredder BIG TIME. This got me to checking out Black Label Society (Zakk's own band) and his solo stuff (Book of Shadows album is sweet). Not a great songwriter, but fierce on the Les Paul and I like his voice. He also has the cut "In this River" - a kill yourself depressing but beautiful tribute to Dimebag Darrell. You can watch the vid on you tube -it's kinda cool, if a little (or alot) cheesey. Also on youtube - acoustic version Zakk's 'Stillborn' - it's way cool. And 'way beyond empty' vid on youtube too.

      New Rock: Wolfmother, Arcade Fire

An Excellent/Unusual Rap/Jazz Fusion Album: 'Jazzmatazz'

Fav recent additions to ipod - singles: Rob Zombie: More Human than Human. Pearl Jam: Given To Fly

Fun 80's classics I recently added to my ipod: the Cult: She Sells Sanctuary, Love Removal Machine. The Alarm: Strength. These three get me dancin'

Zeppelin will be playing at my funeral. and Jimmy Cliff's 'Many Rivers to Cross' - I cry every time I hear that song. When I pick up my acoustic guitar the song that I've played since I was a teenager always comes thru eventually - John Prine's 'Angel from Montgomery'

Look forward to hearing more from others on this topic..... good one Hippster! and thanks for the cocteau twins reminder...... and Gumby - 'Praise You'!- going right on the workout playlist. And that reminds me..... there's an incredibly fun song (see if you can sit still) by the Gospel group Mary Mary called 'Shackles (Praise You)'. I'm not Christian or religious, but I think of freedom from addiction when I hear it..... "Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance, I just wanna praise you, just wanna prasie you.....You broke the chains now I can lift my hands.....and I'm gonna praise you.....". I cry AND dance when I hear this one. Going on the ipod immediately!!

I also love a group called "Pink Martini"
        Gregorian Chants
        Putumayo World Music
Phantom of the Opera... Wicked... Mame...
        Swan Lake... Madam Butterfly...
        Nutcracker Suite
        Sgt. Pepper
        All Christmas Songs
        American Indian music... flute music
There is music from Lewis & Clark that is just beautiful
        Anthems... God Bless America

Oh, I also love it at Disney World at Epcot at the end when they do the light show and the different song for each country and then they come to America....

            Great thread Hipppie !!!!
When I was very young, 11 ish I discovered that I loved the lyrics and soothing sounds of "John Denver"... All my life I said, " I'm gonna see him in concert one day".. I was so devestated when his plane crashed, knowing that dream is gone....
I love different types of music depending on my mood...
            John Denver
            James Taylor
Alabama ( In a Hurry) actually has alot to do with why we moved to the country 14 years ago... really !
            Dixie Chicks, Love Um !!!
Doc Walker ( Rocket Girl, makes me tear up every single time and I do not know why this song has that effect on me... ) I'm passionate about it for some reason.
Then... there are days when the stereo is blasing... remember we are in the country and the nearest house cannot hear this pollution...
            AC/DC ( Money Talks ) kicks bottom !!!!! Yeah !!!
ZZ Top - Love it all.
Heart- Will You be there ( In the morning)
            Nazareth- Greatest Hits,,,
Poison- Love it all, but really love "talk dirty to me "... haaa !! haa !!
Roxette - Touring.... Yep good listening there too... really loud though...

            Great thread Hippie,
Also really love the old song, "Teach Your Children Well " cannot remember who sings it but they have alot of good music ... Anybody remember who sang that one ?

LOL - Floyd - the Great Gig in the Sky off of Dark side of the Moon would be my funeral choice.

You know the one that starts

"I am not frightened of dying - any time will do.
Why should I be frightened of dying - there's no reason for it
              You gotta go sometime"

(Or - Hells Bells - or - Highway to Hell - AC/DC if in more devilish mood if / when I make my choice!)

              Agree on Zakk - awesome!
              Wolfmother - also agree!

Slash can play a 'Paul a bit too!

              Satori

OK still some debate how I categorized some of my music but I was trying to be as quick as I could. I don't really like labeling music but sometimes it is the only way. Bob Dylan is a hard one as he started out more folk/acoustic but his influences cover a broad spectrum me thinks.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned The Beatles yet. Being from Liverpool myself you would of thought I would of mentioned them first. They never really appealed to me though and not even when Oasis came on the scene and everyone started buying their Cd's again. There's plenty of good music people are listening to and a heck of a lot I've never heard of before, especially those of you in the States. I'll have to get on the case on Youtube and Limewire sometime soon so as to give some feedback.

Jazzmatazz I and II, Wonderworld, where great Cd's by GURU and had some great guest artists on. thanks for the reminder Ww.

Limers again Morcheeba and Massive Attack normally classed as Trip Hop. Morcheeba last Cd I bought from them was 'Charango' which has some really laid back tunes on as only Morcheeba could put out.. Was Df118's a crusty band on the fezzy circuit?? like RDF and Back to the planet or Culture Shock/ Citizen Fish?? Loved all them anyway I just mentioned

Satori! Me being a keyboard player influenced my tastes a lot as I'm sure playing the guitar did for you. I started learning the guitar but my teacher at the time was a really big Dire Straits fan so Sultans of Swing was the first tune I was able to play on the guitar. I learned bar chords basically and played all the rhythm bits while he pretended to be Mark Knopler! Lady Writer, Telegraph Road and many more soon followed and so I do like a lot of Dire Straits. Never ventured into playing lead guitar though. AC/DC at your funeral though???!!

Here's a few more I forgot to mention earlier

A whiter Shade of Pale by Procul Harum was my Dad's favourite tune and was played at his funeral 4 years ago. When I first heard it I went straight out and bought the sheet music so I could play it on the piano. Love the tune and it will stay with me forever.

I've heard some great film scores over the years as well which have really captured the moment and none better than 'Braveheart'.

And by the way, Dylan is NOT easy listening as far as I am concerned. How can you say it's easy to listen to Dylan. It takes all the patience I can muster.

Dylan is like marmite beatle you either love it or you hate it!!!

trixie you do seem to have a very abstract taste in music. A lot of the festival bands I used to go and see grew out of the social/anarchist scene in London. I was never young enough to be around for punk! or the 60's for that matter! But I was heavily into The Jam and went to see them in Liverpool when I was 12. I was too small to stand up so I had to get balcony seats!!. It was a great introduction to the live music scene anyway.

My best ever gig as well was Hawkwind 1989 Xenon Codex tour at The Royal Court in Liverpool. I was so spaced out with all the lasers, smoke and the music and shrooms that I thought the support band WHERE Hawkwind they were that good. I got up in the interval to leave thinking it was over!!!

Apart from that all the MEGADOG gigs in Manchester where amazing and I saw Eat Static, The Drum Club, Banco de Gaia, System 7, Children of the Bong and many more there. If anyone is interested google Micheal Dog. Some great dance bands have come out of the free festival scene to be promoted by his label and some great compilations like Planet Dub and the Feed your Head series

I Don't like festivals too much these days as they have become far too commercialised for my liking. My fav festival at present though is WOMAD (World of Music and Dance) which used to be held at Rivermead but this year was moved to Wiltshire The best festival I did go to though was The Treeworgey Fayre in Plymouth again back in 1989 (twas a good year that!!!).

What music to play at my funeral though, that's a real tuffy I can tell you. I'll get back to you on that one!
