          Hippie,

Strangely enough - Dire Straits Sultans was the first thing I played when I picked up the guitar again a few years ago after a LONG break.
Just so happened it was featured in a guitar mag I picked up at the time.
I learned the lead bit tho' - I have played both rhythm guitar and bass guitar in various school / university bands too - but lead has always been my thing!
I will never be a shredder - but I get by.

Some of the most spine tingling, hair raising guitar work is real slow stuff anyway - Gilmour for example - I have goosebumps just sitting here thinking about some of his stuff!
Knopfler - excellent guitarist - but often a little too much country influence in there for my taste.

If you have seen much of the stuff I have posted you will know I build electric guitars as well as play 'em - I prefer playing the Flying V lookalike I made a while back to my "real" guitars, coz I built it to MY spec.

Music is a BIG part of my life - I will listen to almost anything - except country and cheesy pop - like Wonder!

          Great thread!

Love Henry Rollins. He's still in L.A.. Does a radio show, writes alot and tours doing spoke word shows, and also has his own weekly TV show on IFC (Independent Film Channel) where he interviews people, has guest bands and spouts off as only he can. There's also a great documentary from 2006 called 'American Hardcore' which is about the origins of the hard core punk scene in the U.S. He's in it alot talking in detail about the early days of Black Flag. Cool film.

Hey - I have gotten a total musical boost from this thread. Downloaded a bunch of music that was either new to me or reminded of by this thread. So cool - thanks you guys. Love reading the lists -

Cindi - I was in Grad school in Wisconsin in 1990 and going to A.A. at the time. This was just before Stevie died. Who do you think walked in to a meeting, sat himself down in the big circle and shared from the heart? Yup - it was Stevie. I was floored. Cool as the day is long with that black hat on - cruised in with like his entire road crew. Crazy. And then that terrible crash. What a loss for all of us. RIP buddy. Also heard Clapton tell his story from the podium at a meeting a few years back in New York. What a trip there too. It means alot to me to see people like that - musical heroes - walking the walk of sobriety. Showing that it can be done, sharing it with others, and proving that the AF life can be fun. It's so inspiring.
                      :h wonder

Jah wobble!!! He was an amazing bass player and when I first bought his album I was shocked to find out he was white. He did an excellent track as well with the gorgeous Sinead O connor called 'Visions of You' that I have on a chill out CD
