    Questioning Allen Carr?????

Doggygirl;230939 wrote: Congratulations to everyone who has posted that they have QUIT. It's a tough one.

Starlight, there is one more web site that I found really, really helpful. FFSONLINE.ORG. I went through this program diligently - did ALL of the writing exercises. I found it helpful to really understand my triggers, reasons for smoking, and reasons for quitting. Having this stuff in writing is nice too - you can drag it out for review any time.

Just wanted to share another resource in case you want to check it out.

Have you ever looked at the SMART program? I did some of the modules but never really carried it all the way through. I'm thinking about taking another look. Input from anyone who has more seriously engaged with this program????? SMART Recovery?

cigs are very gross things. they smell bad, really bad, worse than poop. they are also expensive.
nothing worse than walking into someones house and getting a whiff of the stuff. They make people's skin look greyish and dry. just seeing an ashtray grosses me completely out.

        yucky yucky stinky.

hope you can stop star and wait till your sense of smell comes back.

LOL, I think my sense of smell never really came back, else I was born with a poor one, but seeing as I started smoking at the age of 11, I guess I will never know. But considering my life during the smoking period, and indeed since, not having much of a sense of smell has been more of a blessing than a curse.

                  Questioning Allen Carr?????

                  Hi Star

I haven't read his smoking books but am familiar with his other work.

Seems to me that he makes a lot of sense and he really takes the illusions away from addictions.

Having battled with it a long time ago, I think it's a very strong mental addiction, even though it feels like you need it physically. And once you kick it NEVER GO BACK. Not even one fag. I definitely believe in that. If alcohol was not so much of a part of society, I would find it easier to accept the same with alcohol (not even one drink).

I have heard good things about hypnotherapy in the UK. There is a guy who has a very high success rate doing hypno for big groups (money back guarantee). I can't remember his name though. Maybe someone will read this and give you some tips. If I still smoked, I definitely would try hypno.

his name is freddy jacquin and I have heard very good things about him from smokers who quit after his group sessions (some went back to it months later, however).

                      Hey babe,

Perhaps you might have a think about going easy on yourself for a little while here. You are just starting a new anti-depressant, you are depressed, you have stopped drinking, perhaps a fag or two is fine just for the time being!? I just got out of a psych clinic and everyone there smoked - it goes with the depression territory - let your a-dep kick in, be a little calmer, get your brain together and then try something out.

For now, smoke away is my prescription.

PS I know what I said is not politically correct, but depression is not good, and trying to do something like quitting cigs when you are at a very fragile point (like starting a new med) is not what most Drs would recommend.

I thought I'd add my 2 cents worth - I bought Allen Carr’s First book about 7 years ago, I read the book, threw it in the cupboard and forgot about it for a year. (I can't remember what but something irritated me at the end of the book. (Patting his own back if I remember correctly) I finally made the decision to stop, I used the micro tabs that you put under your tongue, dug my book out and read it every night like a bible, I came off the tabs after about 3 weeks as I felt I was just prolonging the agony, He said not to use anything, My reasoning was use what ever it takes to get over the addiction. I still read bits and pieces of the book every night. It’s true you have to want to do it, and no its not easy. The book gives you a new light on how you view smoking. The original is not too long, easy to read and too the point. I bought the one for stopping your teenager from smoking, I was really disappointed, much the same as the first book, repetitive of what he had written.
I read parts of his revised books which really annoyed me as he was just telling us how great he was…etc. (Still on the other hand he has helped many thousands)
I hung on the web reading all the info about stopping smoking. I found a wonderful website: mns givingupsmoking-together which was originally an Nhs website with live chat, without them I don’t think I would have survived. It’s an English based group; they are very supportive, much like this group. I haven’t visited the site for awhile, but I know that I wouldn’t have stayed stopped if it was not for them. My husband used Hypnosis and read Allan Carr. He also used the web - read, read and more reading.
Like stopping drinking it’s no magical cure you have to put some effort in.
You can buy the book second hand on Amazon for next to nothing, it’s worth the few dollars, when you think how much money you send of cigarettes, its nothing

I been quit 6 years ago and my hubby 1 year, we both love it and wish we had done it years ago.
We are taking half a world trip next year with all with the money that we saved from not smoking.
Good luck Star light - it’s the best thing you can do for yourself apart, from having stopped drinking. As he says you are Free!

                              Questioning Allen Carr?????

I've never read his books, but I like the comment about Comet (took me a bit to get that one)... so here is a sad story-- I already thought of that idea years ago. I read everything I could about liver disease, cirrhossis, etc. then imagined the alcohol as directly causing these horrible diseases the moment I ingested it (and believe me, I have a vivid imaginiation, I could really SEE it). So, guess what-- I just pinched my nose, closed my eyes and poured it down as fast as I could. Now that is pathetic, eh?
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

                                Questioning Allen Carr?????

                                Hey Star,

I read his books, and they really helped me gain perspective on the "nicodeamon". But when I quit, I did it very similar to the MWO philosophy: COMBINATION!

                                - The book (set up the right mindset)
                                - NLP hypnosis (on repeat play all night, every night) - took about a week
                                - meditation
                                - supplements
                                - tapping (EFT) - or acupressure techniques
                                - Chantix (or any other dopamine blocker)
                                - support group (online)
                                - exercise

Worked wonders in no time flat! I didn't even have the urge when I was in a room full of smokers choking up my oxygen supply. However...

Skip forward a few years to some major back-to-back life changing dramas - I picked them up again. Tasted awful!!!! Now I find myself back at square one: my only VALID reason for not putting them down now is fear of withdrawal. Period. ~3 days, or so of flue-like symptoms? What gives!! It was easy before. We can do this!
