I think maybe "Reason" has a twin stupid brother and his name is "Duh".
When I'm drinking, "Duh" quietly slips in and fills the spot where "Reason"
usually sits, so I think "Reason" is still there taking good care of things.
What happens after drink one? Sometimes nothing. Sometimes a little
"tingle" or something that says "this is kind of nice".
So OK, here comes drink two. I can always "feel" it somewhere before the
end of drink two, but I've still got all of my faculties (or so it seems).
For me, after that 2nd drink, there's that almost imperceptible "glow", a
knowledge that I now feel a little different, and sometimes I really enjoy
that.
By that point I know I *MUST* know exactly where I will stop. I know that
because if there is anything at all vague about how many more I will have,
"Duh" will see to it that I keep on drinking.
Here's what I know about me...
1) If I'm enjoying that little glow then I'll probably want to keep on
enjoying it, at least for a while, and I don't think there's a thing wrong
with that.
2) Reason (and experience) tells me that I WILL feel it for a while without
needing to drink anything more.
3) "Reason" is alcohol's first casualty.
So you went over your plan... Oops. Next time just make sure "Reason" has
already made a good decision for you BEFORE you drink, then when the time
comes let "Duh" decide whether you want water, coffee, or fruit juice.
