Thanks for sharing too Beatle. I will check it out. I always have a lot of doubt in many of these self help books, but I am willing to learn more anyway.

            stupid question hehehe

Hey guys.. I actually did order the book awhile ago from someone on here who mentioned it. I just picked it up recently, and read parts of it. I def think i fit into so many of the categories.. probably the allergic.. I have insomnia, fatigue, headaches, depression, possibly candida.. i ordered a few supplements on their that seemed to fit for me.. waiting in the mail. and no to Kate, I do not think blackouts are funny.. i seriousally cried on the floor of my room for six hours after awaking that night and remembering how fuzzy it was and how much of a fool i made out of myself. its very scary. i havent tried the supplements on here, so i want to try them, but if they dont work and i dont feel different, im going to go af and attend aa meetings as well. i know alot of people do not like aa here, but i would like to be around people who have the similar problem with alcohol that i have, and we can talk about it. the bok you guys are talking about is very complex.. they also talk about going to the doctor and getting certain tests to see this and what you are deficient in, etc... and i feel like its so much!
Beatle-low tryptophan... interesting.. i am ordering all these things.. just awaiting them to arrive.. but tryptophan I forgot to order, knowing it would be beneficial to me. i currently take 5-htp, which is a form of tryptophan, but ive heard tryptophan is better...
as far as my question asking about how come alcohol hits me all of a sudden, i was really asking basically something my bf brought up, that maybe it stays in your stomach fo awhile and if you drink and drink, it adds up in your stomach, but you dont feel the effects quite yet..... its hard for me to explain.

              stupid question hehehe

              Hi me!

Personally, I don't think it matters in what manner it hits you. How many drinks are you having when you black out? I am betting a huge amount. That is the reason you are blacking out.

Can you tell us what you have on those nights?

It sounds like you think you are fine until some sudden moment when you black out .but is this really true or is this the way other people see you?
If you are drinking really fast you may not notice the warning signs. And even if you notice you are getting drunk a friend may not and tell you that you seemed perfect until a sudden moment where you switched off.

It sure is scary and I hope you stick around.

                  stupid question hehehe

If you have been drinking for a long time, the explanation is your body. It cannot process the alcohol quick enough anymore. This is why you feel buzzed quicker and move straight to blackout.

This is like me. I am past the point where I had a tolerance and could drink anyone under the table. My Liver can't handle it anymore.

Unfortunately, My mind still thinks I can and will drink to excess.

                    stupid question hehehe

There is a little controversy over tryptophan versus 5-HTP, but based on all I have read (a lot) I prefer 5-HTP over tryptophan. I don't think there is a major difference except 5-HTP works faster and it may not be so important to take it on an empty stomach as it is to take tryptophan. You may want to consider taking a higher dose, though.

                        stupid question hehehe

KateH1, I agree with beatle. Sometimes have pretended to laugh when crushed with guilt and shame inside. Somehow the pain and shame make me outwardly laugh while inside I died x 1,000. KateH1 you may have been a tad harsh. On the other hand you may have been trying to solidify the message?.. As in, ?take a good look at wot you are doing to yourself gurl?? Must say Kate, at first glance thought you were being harsh. Sorry. Was told once when pointing the finger, ?Remember 3 other fingers of your own hand are pointing back at you?.

No offence meant to anyone. I promise.
Mel45 have also embarrassed myself big time and nearly collapsed when I read your suffering and that is what it is too me, ?A suffering?. No person in their right mind would have done that and I have been that person, not the same story but the same humiliation, same self-hatred etc??? I do not judge you Mel.
Would like to ask you to just try?. like me.........
                        to pick yourself up.

                          stupid question hehehe

Victory and Beatle thank you. i know, i wouldnt have done that in my right mind. what kate said gave me a thought of " you know i really like everyone on this board, maybe i shoulodnt post there anymore if people are going to be mean" However, I think she just thought i was thinking it was funny that we have this problem, but thats not what i was saying "hehe" for. i tried to explian to my dad who i embarassed so much. its not me, at all. i barely remember the night. to be honest i lay there thinking of killing myself. ( but i have faith in God so i didnt) and right now, i couldnt touch a beer. the thought of that night brings it back. its not our fault if we have this problem, what is our fault is if we dont do anything about it. so i am trying the supplements and if i get too drunk out with my bf, im going to do aa. kate yes, i meant "hehe" meaning, stupid question guys, as in "im not that smart, but id like to know how alchol hits me with a blackout when i feel buzzed and then the next minute i dont get it" I was saying heheh making fun of myself for being stupid and having to ask that question. like i said, say you want to drive. if you drink three beers, they say to wait three hours before you drive. so its like every hour a beer leaves. (maybe not your system but you know what i mean) but my bf was saying how if your drinking wine fast, it sits in your stomach and doesnt hit you in that hour, and if you have two three glasses of wine, they;ll hit you at once... but he may not know what hes talking about. hes not sure. Thats all. Change my life, very true also. My body is messed up physically. i have insomnia, headaches, fatigue, etc. , my periods come every three months .so i dont think its working properly to begin with. i had this my whole life, before the alcohol problem, so it wasnt the alcohol that caused my physical problems. And Nancy, maybe your right. I probably am not "FINE". i kinow i feel the alcohol, i jus tknow and my parents knew it too, that one minute i was carrying on a conversation and i had one more glass problably of wine, maybe two, cuz i cant remember, and then i couldnt keep a conversation, and couldnt walk right out of the restaurant.

                            stupid question hehehe

me, it scares the hell out of me now to think of all the nights I blacked out. Like beth said, ANYTHING could have happened any of those nights.........I can only thank God that it didn`t. I could never allow myself to go back to living like that.

Truly, when you`re blacking out, it really is time to quit drinking period.

                            Wishing you all the best.

                              stupid question hehehe

                              Hey Me,

You are posting here, and asking serious questions that soooo many of us have asked soooo many times. That's awesome! It's proof positive that you're concerned, scared, want to do better, etc... Who cares whether you "package" your questions in self-protective giggles or wallow in self-pity tears! The bottom line is the same: you want to understand so you can do better. Good job for stepping up!

I'm one of the "lucky ones" (or maybe not so lucky, depending on your point of view - since I remember tooooo many details of some really embarrassing alcohol-induced events). But I've been reading a lot, trying to understand why my 18 year old daughter blacks out nearly every time she drinks, and so did her father. (opinions about underage drinking not withstanding)

A few theories I've read include:

                              1) Hypoglycemic glucose crash - The liver prioritizes metabolism of various things, and once alcohol is introduced, glucose "production" in the liver completely stops until the various stages of alcohol processing is finished.

How I translate this one: If there's not enough glucose (the brain's primary "food" source) in the blood stream or body tissues or whatever, then the brain starts shutting down non-essential tasks as part of the [frankly remarkable] sequence of life preservation mechanisms, so that whatever brain-fuel requirements can be redirected to maintaining the basics (breathing, heartbeat, etc).

Something interesting: I've also read that the absolute WORST time to drink is within 4-6 hours after a heavy working out. Apparently, this has something to do with how the body uses glucose as energy for muscles during intense workouts ... therefore depleting what the brain needs to "survive" during alcohol consumption, that much faster.

                              2) Seretonin deficiency - (Tytrophane metabolizes to 5HTP which then metabolises to seretonin, melatonin, and contributes to the metabolization of a few other things...) Either insufficient amounts of this neurotransmitter in the brain (which is a major contributor to regulating moods, personality, memory perspectives, and sleep patterns), OR something-gone-haywire with the brain's ability to regulate how it gets used (usually either substance or stress induced).

How I translate this one: If alcohol make you piss out all the nutrients that create and regulate this hormone(?), then it makes since to me that if you're alcohol consumption or stress levels (or both) are too extreme for too long, your body can't keep up any more - so it needs either a SERIOUS break to recover, or some SERIOUS supplements to keep up.

                              3) Consumption speed and absorption
                              - There's quite a bit of research on "lever shock" due to "guzzling" or "binge drinking" (depending on your preferred terminology). This theory suggests that the body goes into some sort of "shock mode", until it figures out what's going on and goes through a series of [again magnificent] reactions to determine how best to deal with the threat. Generally, this category is reserved for once-in-a-blue-moon excessive drinkers, but I assume everyone's different? In my readings/research, it seems somehow that this also relates to food consumption prior to and during (I don't understand how yet - something about stomach vs small intestine buffering and absorption).

                              How I translate this one
: Don't go overboard with hard liquer, without making sure you've got enough "slow absorbtion" (protiens & complex carbs) foods in your stomach, to slow their transition to the small intestine (a rapid absorption organ). And do water in between each drink to dilute and further slow down alcohol metabolism effects.

                              4) Dehydration
                              - There's a bunch of info on how dehydration affects the body - both short term and longterm. But memory problems rank among the top after effects.

                              How I translate this one
: Alcohol interrupts some sort of "fluid retention" hormone(?), so during an alcohol "episode", fluid retention goes out the window to such an extreme that the body starts doing "crazy" stuff to protect basic survival. (I need to research this one further)

                              Hope this helps ...
I really DO care! (And I want answers that make sense)

                              Hugs!
                              -Patty-

Which is one reason us gastric bypass patients really get hammered and fall into alcoholism fast. Our stomachs have been changed so that it BYPASSES the small intestine and goes directly to the large intestine. Hmmm. No freaking BUFFERING...
