How long after quitting do you feel bad?

My husband quit drinking 27 days ago, and he still feels terrible- shaky, depressed, lousy. How long does it usually take to feel "normal" again?

He quit cold after 10 years of daily drinking, averaging 300 ml hard alcohol per night.

I am very proud of him, but worried if he doesn't start feeling better soon he will start drinking again.

Sorry for the dumb question, I have spent hours searching and can't find a good answer. Are there any studies on this, or accepted numbers (or ranges of numbers) that are considered typical?

    Thank you!

That isn't a dumb question at all. I'm no doc, but speaking only from my own experience, I started feeling better within the first week. Are you sure something else isn't going on? I think he should see a doc. :l

He definitely feels better than he did 3 weeks ago- the first week he could barely get out of bed or string a sentence together. We expected that, but we thought that after a month he would be feeling pretty normal again.

He is too ashamed to go to a doctor, afraid people will find out. We live in a small town, and he is too proud. The reality is no one would care, but that's not the way he sees it.

What about going to another place, then. A bigger town nearby? Men, they drive me crazy....they complain terribly if they have a sliver, but they think something major happens they wanna stick their head in the sand. Frustrating!

I usually feel better 5-7 days and then that gradually increases for a couple of weeks. Good nutrition is important, alcohol does soak away lots of vitamins, amino acids etc. A month is a long time to feel bad, the booze is no longer doing its evil work. It may be time to bite th ebullet and seek medical advice, even if you have to travel a while.

He needs to eat well and take supplements. If he is ok now, try to get good food into him and LOTS of supps. This is good. He will recover. Good on him and you.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

i have known of people who take up to 3 months to feel good again. I really think the amino acids and the supplements help. he probaly is having a malnutrition problem.
I did when I first started here and felt tired and sort of spacey and empty inside.

I have to agree that it is time for him to get some blood work done maybe... You would hate for something to be going on without treating it properly.. He is a very brave man..
Nutrition is soooo important... Not only eating healthy foods, but taking some supplements..
I'd like to suggest magnesium, B-complex vitamins, milk thistle, lithium orotate, L-glutamine... If you look at the thread about holistic healing on this website it is loaded with information... All the very best, tell him to hang in there... Together as a team you two will pull through... You got this far !!!

Yes to above. I agree. Keep going. 300ml=~10-11 oz=~(about)8 1 1/2 oz drinls or 6 2 oz drinks or about1/2 bottle liquor. For sure he needs supplements .but & I hate to say this ...are you sure he was not drinking more than that? My brother (58 yr old) had been drinling the equivalent or more of whiskey & did not have this experience at all

Boarder - you're a great team! Well Done indeed!

Sounds as if hubby could have a really collapsed adrenal system (booze really upsets this). If you can get hold of some Adrenal Boost type sups - if you're in the US you should be able to get them over the counter or at a health food store. In the UK/Europe you can order them from Nutri Nutri Natural, Herbal and Vitamin Supplements - go for the Adrenal Complex vits but mostly the Nutri Adrenal. And have him eat loads of liquorice (but too much is a laxative!) which is great for the adrenals.

It can be a mirace boost - I hope it is for him. (Was for me!)

Good luck. But get bloods done soon if no improvement - adrenal sups should show improvement in a couple of weeks if it's the right thing.

                    Love FMS xx

Boarder...I'd get some bloodwork done...health is #1 and this doesn't sound right at all. he should be happy, excited, energetic etc. by now. At least a significant portion of the time anyhow.

When I stopped I had headaches and that around 3-4 weeks - every day bad headaches and felt 'off colour' somehow, then after 5 weeks I felt ok again...good luck...

It could be depression - his brain chemistry is all over the place and he's just lost a big part of his life..... get him up and out the door and do some moderate walking - go fun places and see fun (sober) people, as well as the supplements and eating right.
It always seems impossible until it's done....

It also may be he was alcoholic to combat some problems he was having already. I too would get some blood work done. Have him go in for a yearly physical and get a full blood work up. That will rule out a lot of medical problems, or find what needs to be addressed.
