1) they do not die
2) they can be freed from slavery
lousy gladiators were killed off for sport or stayed in servitude.
let us ponder the mindset of these people. what if a gladiator said to his coach just prior to a fight " well, guess I'll go out there and see what happens....maybe hop around a bit and hope he doesn't hit me". I don't think that fight is going to go well.
a fight of this importance must be looked at with all the reverence of classic warfare.
Accounts of winning fighters are that they won mentally before even entering the Circus Maximus. They raised their sword to the sky and howled like a wolf when they spied their opponent. They didn't just enter the arena....they stalked their enemy constantly. They blocked attacks with their shield and hacked off any part of their enemy that they could reach giving him no quarter and no retreat possible. They fought with a frenzy only possible to a crazed, focused, goal-oriented combatant. When they got cut they didn't stop to look and wonder about it...they pressed forward to victory. And ultimately to freedom.
may God have mercy upon my enemy. for I will not.
may your battle be glorious my friends.
