what do you say at social events..
when your AF (5th day AF but very determined and just realised I can't mod). I just know I'm going to get roasted with the 'just take a drink' brigade. Any quick witted retorts would be great folks. I'm going to be training for a half marathon so I can use the fact I'm in training until March, but after that?Honour ThyselfTags: None

Boy I have heard and thought of a lot of excuses.
But the best I have read recently is from retteacher. She said (sorry trying to recall the post) something like when someone asks her as she enters the party if she wants a drink she says she is going to "start with soda" and I think she occasionally says she has a headache with that request. then when the person comes back around and asks her for a drink she just says she is going to stick with the soda for now. Please look up her posts because I think she has done very well.

I've been wondering the same thing. In 3 weeks, the company I work for will have their National Sales Meeting, which normally means unlimited booze every night.... I was going to try to fake it and sneak the O'Douls into a frosty mug.
NOW, IS THAT SCREWED UP OR WHAT?????

Tell them you are on special medication and can't drink. They don't need to know the medicine is "life."
I have a sober friend who got clean over 20 years ago. She told me that she claims an allergy to alcohol (the brutal truth) ... and if she is persistently pressed by anyone as to the allergic side effects, she simply tells them, "it makes me act foolishly, sleep with other women's husbands, and throw up the next morning." Usually, they don't push it any further.Courage is fear that has said its prayers. - Karl Barth

Why not just order a non-alcoholic drink with no excuses!
Many people choose not to drink alcohol, for many reasons. Why add to your burdon by making up excuses and lying? This only adds to your burdon.
Simply put, we do not owe anyone any reason for not drinking alcohol. We just choose not to!

The menopause! True! "Can't take it since the menopause..." (Not presuming you are an 'oldie' like me though! But for anyone who is....!) Men will certainly not press further and you'll be amazed how many women will agree with you!
Not to be tried if George Clooney asks to buy you a drink! Just go with Mary's which is brill... No one has any need to be so nosy as to ask why....alcohol is only ethanol with flavouring - true rocket fuel - and doesn't deserve to be explained at all...
Good luck!

all great suggestions
does anyone else get annoyed when acquantences (is that how you spell that?) get annoyed with you when you aren't drinking, it's almost as if your trying to spoil the party. I've been in this situation before and find I go about with this stuck on smile on my face, that starts to hurt my face muscles and go out of my way to join in the fun as if to say, look I'm not wasting the party, I'm enjoying myself, honest.
Maybe it's because I can be a riot at a party, when drunk and this is what they want of me. Well, let someone else be the drunk that gets talked about the next day and let me wake up the next day guilt and shame free. I'm ranting a bit but it really annoys that I'm made to feel so self conscious and these gatherings, oh and yes there's also usually a great laugh had by all at some of my past antics where I have to laugh along with them all when inside I'm dying.
Sorry to sound so aggressive and I'm surprising myself, don't want to get all bitter and twisted.Honour Thyself

You know people get annoyed when you don't participate because you'll remember everything!
I try and nip it in the bud by getting my own drink as soon as I walk in. If that doesn't work I tell them "Can I have some water first I just finished running and I'm really thirsty" and if your physique gives it away, there's always Masquerades suggestion.
I'm just waiting for the day that I feel strong enough to admit to the host I have a problem.

Success
spent the entire day at the party...last to leave (usually not a good sign)....
still AF......
Actually said: "Just starting off with water"........"Beer? No thanks but do you have a soda pop??".........."I just don't feel like drinking"......"I'm really trying to get healthier this year and I know the beer will not be good"...
People were understanding and didn't press the issue....i had worse conversations with myself....inside my head as i passed the cooler of beer, i kept hearing the voice.....pulled strength fromt the MWO board.....after posting i new that you all were expecting me to win...wasn't going to let you down, nor myself...
thanks for the support even if you didn't know that you were providing any....-maybe, is the new maybe-
