Cold/Icy weather members ...need ur advice

We live in the South where we rarely get snow/ice events but have had 2 in the last 5 days, all I can say is WOW!

Here's the problem....Our front yard is shaded so nothing has melted except the snow off the roof which went right down our steep driveway and promptly froze, so now the driveway is a sheet of 1/4 inch thick ice. Hubby got out to go to work this morning by putting cat litter just on the parts he needed to go to the car and then coasted down the driveway...that worked fine. However...

When he comes home this afternoon he has to come UP the steep icy driveway and even though it's a little over freezing now, this stuff is NOT melting at all. What can I do?

    :anyone:

Diamond- Have your husband stop and get some ice-melt... if they have it. If they don't have it, then get water softener pellets- it will work in a pinch (ha-ha).... but make sure you sweep it up tomorrow so it doesn't pit your driveway.
P.S. This is based upon my Minnesota background, not sunny FL....

Thanks so much! Gonna try the salt since I have lots and don't want hubby to have to stop anywhere on his way home.

Now pray I don't bust my buns putting salt on the driveway :H

                Diamond,

Make sure hubby knows NOT to stop on the hill but to keep going at a slow and steady speed until he gets to where he can stop.

Starting on a hill on ice is not an easy task.

                Good luck!

Thank you Cindi, I will IM and tell him. Just finished laying the salt and it's melting. That's pretty weird! It started cracking right away. I don't think it will go away completely but it's better than it was and looks like he'll make it if he goes slow and steady (fingers crossed). BTW my buns are unbusted.....hmmmm that just don't sound right :H .

Thanks again everyone who replied, you're the best!
