I Have A Question About Milk Thistle

I hope someone can help me with this. I purchased some milk thistle at my local grocery store and I dont know if it is as safe as the one MWO has. It does not have all the ingredients. I just want to make sure it is ok to take.

If anyone knows if there is a difference I would appreciate some advice. I want to make sure that I am taking something that is safe for my body.

    Jacy,

I can't answer your question but am posting to it to bump it up for others who might know.

I Have A Question About Milk Thistle

I have milk thistle from the pharmacy. The main active ingredient is silybin(silybum). That's what's important. I have one bottle that says it's concentrated with 250mg of silybum. My other bottle is 175mg of silybum.

I would go with the MWO stuff. For me, it has no side effects, while I got the sweats from others. But it is probably ok, anyway. Don't throw it away.

          Thanks for your advice.

Breeze I will look on the bottle tonight to see if it has that ingredient.

Beatle thanks for your info. I tried one last night and I didn't get the sweats or any side affects, but this could be because I just started taking it. If I have that problem I will discontinue use from that product and just get some from MWO. When the Achl is finally out of my system I will try taking it again.

I Have A Question About Milk Thistle

Plain and simple milk thistle, as tablets/capsules/tincture, is a good herb for the liver and safe to take at the recommended dose on the pack

              Another question???

              Thanks "SightlySuzzie"

The bottle I purchase indicates one capsule a day should I follow that or take at least two?

I Have A Question About Milk Thistle

Its also important to make sure that your milk thisle is standardized extract, so you know you're getting the advertized amount of silymarin. A lot of the cheaper milk thistle caps anren't standardized extract and so while they may be (for example) 140 mg of "milk thistle" there may not be as much silymarin in them as a 140mg standardized extract cap.

Also if I'm not mistaken milk thistle has to build up in your system a little before its full effects can be realized, so personally I always load up for the first couple weeks, then back down to the recommended dosage (again thats just me). With milk thistle the longer you stay on it (and obviously the longer you're AF) the better.

                    Believe

                    Hi Believe...

This is what is on the bottle:

Milk Thistle Extract (silybum marianum) (seed)..... 200 mg (80% silymarine)
Milk Thistle Powder (silybum marianum) (seed) .....250 mg

Is this enough to take one capsule a day.. All suggestions would be appreciated.

I Have A Question About Milk Thistle

Actually Jacy i would look at i of those caps as a maintainance dosage for a normal person. By normal I mean someone who dosen't/hasn't abused their liver with things like alcohol or 17-alpha-alkylated oral compounds which can really strain the liver.

I personally start out with at least 2 (of the strength you mentioned) caps twice a day for the first month, then taper down to 1 cap twice a day. No way would I bother going lower than 2 caps a day.

That may sound a bit extreme, and again thats just me. I've certainly abused my liver in the past. But I learned that from some people who are experienced in dealing with hepatoxic compunds, so I feel comfortable in doing it this way. I'm by no means a doctor though, I'm just sharing what I do.

I think the Milk Thistle they sell on this site would be good for when you taper down since I beleive it also contains dandelion (root?) which is another herbal liver (among other things) tonic. Apparently though the dandelion has a duretic (and in some people a mild laxative) effect so you may not want to be eating them by the handful! Sticking to the recommended dosage would be a good idea here.

Personally right now I'm running a supplement called Liv.52, you can google it or whatever if you want, its also a very popular liver protectant. Milk Thistle is awsome too though.

                      Hope you find this helpful

I Have A Question About Milk Thistle

Hi, folks. I know what milk thistle is for as I have done research for what I feel I should be taking for supps. But my question is - do you actually feel anything different after being on it? Also, once you have "cleansed" the liver by taking it, can't you stop taking it after a while? It seems it's for temporary use as long as you don't go back to drinking or putting any other toxins in your body. I'm just a firm believer of not taking things you don't really need. What are your thoughts and experiences?

Thanks of any info you can provide.

                        Love, Me

I Have A Question About Milk Thistle

                          Hi there Thankful!

Personally i don't feel anything while using Milk Thistle. If I'm not mistaken though it forms a protective layer (or something like that) around the liver that helps out witth exposure to toxins. It also aids in the regeneration of liver cells supposedly.

IMHO in a perfect world where we could detoxify our body and never again ingest any toxins that had to pass through the liver then it would be ok to stop taking it. I don't know if toxins can be avoided though. You never know if we might slip up and drink again, or have to take hepatoxic scrips (like Accutain for instance) or whatever.

I haven't seen any studies that point to problems stemming from long term administration of Milk Thistle....so I would have to ask where the harm would be in keeping up a maintainance dosage indefinatley.

Haha I just got off work so I'm dead tired, I hope I'm making sense. Just my .02

I Have A Question About Milk Thistle

I take mine everyday since our bodies are always in contact with toxins-ie. anything absorbed thru our skin (moisturizers, make-up), air pollutants, foods we eat (preservatives). Our liver is a busy little organ filtering out every thing we come in contact with. I help it out with Milk Thistle.
