    My heart is broken

Aw... that's too bad, Jude... and we humans will never know what started it all, either... the animal kingdom.

Yea, sounds like they are fighting to kill. Sad.

      My heart is broken

      Jude....
I can't sleep- I found a website put together by the University of Wisconsin- Steven's Point, that's a bunch of links about dog behavior:

Dr. P's Dog Training Library - Behav. Probs.

If the problem isn't the time involved in re-training them, and if your dog is as heartbroken as you guys, maybe you might consider getting him back~ kind of like doggie rehab?
I went through some of the links, and I thought the following website was an excellent one about dog fights, and how to break them up... I was surprised to learn that yelling to stop a fight only makes the fight worse...

How to Break up a Dog Fight without getting hurt

(Disclaimer: the website is trying to sell training DVDs and accessories, but like MWO, there is some great free information- there is a 22 minute free video, and a free download of a 60 page article- some of it is advertising, but most of the article is information and emails from dog owners that have experienced dog fights, asking for advice.... even if you decide to leave the other dog at the shelter, you may find some solitude knowing that you aren't alone in your sorrow, and that you did what was best for everyone...):h

It is so wierd that they were OK for so long.
        But definitatly not now.
Just can't risk anybody getting bitten again.
If we were to have friends over for a BBQ or to play pool...etc... or just a neighbor @ the door...
I have a Grandma who's gonna be 100 years old in May.
I want to be able to invite her over! We have her couches for criste sake!

All I want to say is - I'm thinking of you at this sad time.

You do not have to make excuses. You did the right thing.

              My heart is broken

              Hi Jude,

Sometimes we have to do things that are hard but essential.

I had to end the life of my Jack Russell. I had to hold him in my arms and feel like i was betraying him. But the alternative fate for him was worse than what I was doing.

You couldn't let it continue the way it was.

I wish I knew what to say. I've had to do the nightime vet visits because of fight injuries. I feel your sadness. Are there rescue organizations there with foster home people? I got my last dog from a rescue place. Current one is a stray that adopted us.

Jude - aw......a HUGE hug from me to you..... I had to put one dog of two into shelter once....it was the right thing to do and the only thing to do but I still felt a heartless criminal for years. But it all worked out for the best all round.... Trust, girl, trust....you're looking after your Granma and friends and family....and good on you. All will be well.

                  Another HUG, and to Scott...

                    Ah Jude,

I'm so sorry. I have big dogs too and I know how loveable they are but also how dangerous their teeth and jaws can be.

You've done the only thing you could in order for everyone, including Sammy, to be safe.

It's so bloody hard to say goodbye to a pet.

If you and Scott love him this much someone else will too.

Awww Jude, I just have read and am crying for you and Scott.... We have 2 labs and are blessed to never have this happen, but,.... I would make the same decision as you and Scott did... It is the O N L Y thing that you could do. This lovely dog will get a good home where he can be continued to be loved... He is a great dog, just needs to be an "only" child. Chin up and I look forward to you telling us about his new, loving home. It'll be OK Hon ... :l

                        Jude,

I am sorry, this is really quite the dilemma but I don't think you had much of a choice. I wish there was something that could be done to make you feel better. :l

It's just killing me thinking of him being caged up right now.:upset:

I did take his food dish & some of his toys in yesterday, after Scott had dropped him off (stuff he'd forgotten in the morning)
But I just dropped it out front with some of the volunteers & didn't go in the back to see him...

Very true, Finding... you're doing what is best for people... no more dog bites.

Wow, Green, I guess my daddy's dogs' fights weren't as bad as I thought. He never had to take one of them to the vet. I was just a little kid, though, so what did I know... for all I know they could have just been rough-housing and I thought it was a fight...

That must have been hard... sort of like going to see an incarcerated child... you just don't want to see your baby caged up.

What happens to the animals if no one adopts them? Do you think you'll go get Sammy back if they decide to euthanize him? Does the shelter let you know before they do?

I guess the other dog must really feel "alpha". He won the fight! Sammy's gone and he is still there
