I just keep coming back here to read this. I am just so moved by this wonderful news. You and I both were faced with horrific news. Our Mothers were dying of cancer. My Mom was not as lucky as yours, but it brings me joy to see your Mom is happy. God bless you all!!!!

I am so happy for her I keep pinching myself!

IAD, I am guessing you are wondering about the man she is marrying? My Mom is so upstanding, and she has really taken the time to get to know him and of course my siblings and I have put him through our own personal interviews now as well, and he seems the absolute perfect fit for her. He has taken her to meet his close friends, all of whom have told Mom that they have known him for so many years and how highly they think of him. He is also a current college professor at a University. He also makes and designs gorgeous jewelry from mines that he goes to as he is also a Geologist. He is really amazing. But the best part about it, is I can tell that he absolutely adores her. She has never been loved or treated so wonderful in her life. My Mom has nothing financial for this man to gain except the inheritence to us as children, which they are having a pre-nup, and he is more than fine with that. He is financially set and just wants to love and take care of her. We are having so much fun planning her wedding! Its in August.

Southernbelle -- I agree, she truly should write a book. She has overcome cancer three times, and is the most joyful person I know.

The only sad angle to this wonderful story, is that we are currently looking for an assisted living place for my Dad who is same age as my Mom (way to young to be going into a nursing home) because of the dementia he has developed as a result of long term alcohol abuse. He started drinking heavily about 20 years ago when my Mom was diagnosed with cancer the first time. And while my Mom bravely fought cancer 3 times over the last 20 years and is the picture of health right now, my Dad continued drinking. All the sudden in the last year, he just started losing his memory. About five years ago he had become violent and absusive to my Mom, and and after attacking her in a drunken fit, was put in jail for three months. She even took him back when he got out because she could not fathom divorcing the man she had known and loved for forty years. He made promises, quit drinking for a while, but then picked up again and got worse than ever. She had to leave her home because it was no longer safe about two years ago. Then six months later, got the worse diagnosis of terminal cancer.

So now here we are a year and a half later, and I am either on the phone talking with my Mom about invitations and plans, or I'm answering the phone from prospective nursing homes gathering info for my Dad. I just find it so very, very sad that my Dad -- the one who could have chosen to get healthy at some point and have a second lease on life to enjoy my Mom and that he is not losing her to cancer after all, is now losing her forever because of his choices. I only share that part because it should be a wake up call for any of us to do all we can to make ourselves as healthy and free from any clutches of alcohol so that years down the road, we too can be living in freedom, joy and discovering new miracles even when we are old because of the decisions we chose to make today. I have two examples in my parents, and I want to "grow up" to be just like my Mom. She is my hero.

Oh my god Prest: that is the most powerful, moving story ... unbelievable. was going to post in joy and amazement about your mom, and then read the last part about your dad. a wake-up call indeed for those of who still might have some time. oh so sad about your dad but ever so beautiful about your mom:h :h .

How glorious, Prest! Your mom sounds like she deserves a HUGE dose of happiness, and I am so glad that she is getting it. I am sorry about your dad--I hope his dementia keeps him unaware of what is happening to him....

It is great to hear of you and your Mom having such a good time planning! I, too, remember when she got the terminal diagnosis. What a long time ago that seems!

And young at heart, my thougts are always there. I worry about him too. He doesnt know... we are all talking about IF and when we should tell him. But will not be soon.

Hi Prest4time, the news about your mom getting married, made me smile BIG TIME!! A retired navy pilot/prof/gemstone expert?? Does it get any better than that?? Your mom sounds like a class act lady and has been through so much, she should only have happiness from here on. You all do have an amazing story.
