    Antabuse question

After serious consideration, I think I want to try this avenue to kick this horrible habit. Anyone who has used this med...where can you get it online? How much do you take? Do you know if it is ok to take with effexor. And how has it worked for you?

Thanks in advance for the info.

    Antabuse question

    Beth,

I, too, am SERIOUSLY considering it. I have made an appt for Monday.

I know AFM and Det are taking it. It is one way to get the option of drinking off the table.

    Good luck to us both!!

        Antabuse question

        Hi

I am taking 500mg daily in The AM with breakfast. I have been on it 3+weeks and doing great. No side effects except metal mouth when I first started taking it. Also taking ZOloft at night and Desyrel for sleeping. In time I hope to do a maintenace of 125MG per day. Suggest a doctor for there are side effects and serious directions to follow on alcolhol...even in mosthwash use, foods, sauces, perfume, etc

I also had a med alert bracelet with it on it done for emergencies. And do not give anyone alcohol when they are on it. The consequences can be life threatening.

          Antabuse question

          Hey Lucy!!

Antabuse tablets or disulfiram were the ONLY things that worked for me in the beginning. Will power alone was not enough for me to quit drinking. I had to take 4 x 200mg tablets the first day, in the morning, then reduce them one a day until I was regularly taking 1 x 200mg tablet a day. I was prescribed mine through my GP on the understanding that I sought and pursued counseling. Once I had he was willing to continue and prescribe them for me. I still have half a bottle which I've kept out of sight but I know they are there if things go really bad for me again. i know there are people who just take one tablet if they are feeling like they have the urge to drink and it stops them dead in their tracks. I've heard people say they have a half life of 3-4 days but when I read up more about them I think it is a safe bet to say it is more like 7 days. I'm no medical expert so you are best asking a GP or pharmacist!!

            Thank you Hippie

I am really looking forward to this. I just can't go to my GP though. I have heard a few people mention River Pharmacy on line. I just don't know if that is the best way to get them without a RX. Hoping someone can tell me a little more info. about ordering.

Lucy, I think River may be the way for you. I, like you, don't want the AL black mark on my med record. People get topo from there. I think if it wasn't a reliable source, RJ wouldn't have it on this site.

Lucy, got to health store (top of this page) and you'll see a little ad on the right side for River Pharmacy that says "anti-craving".

                  Hi Lucy,
I wish that I had information regarding Anti-buse, but I don't. Have you thought of checking it out in the on line PDA? I bet you might also find reliable information on WebMD.

I commend you for you comittment to gaining the sobriety that you so richly deserve. I applaud you for being so willing to take this step! You know that you have my support, "Always".

                    Antabuse question

                    Love IT!!!

Has worked great for me as well. 3 months sober after years of heavy binge drinking. I take 250mg every morning. I do however get an rx from my doctor. I feel no shame in it all, as the shame I felt from drinking and the self disgust from my actions far outweighed the discomfort of getting antabuse prescribed. But that's just me. I went 4 or 5 days sober before taking it. I then proceed to take it immediately in the morning before I even have a thought of what I would do that night. Only thing that has worked this well for me yet. I have no cravings at all. Something about knowing you can't drink just allows my mind to focus on other things. In the past, while trying sheer will power, I could muster anywhere from 2 - 3 weeks. However, there was a constant struggle to fight the urge, knowing all to well how easy it is to obtain the elixir to remove my problems at the moment. I also heard people get scripts from River Pharmacy, but I myself have not. I do have a few words of advice with the antabuse. First, don't f*ck with it. Don't think, "hey, I'm curious to see if this works." You'll only hurt yourself. Secondly, I'd keep on top of your health with periodic blood test to check for liver enzymes, as any pill you put into your system can be taxing on your liver. Third, well, I guess third is Good Luck. If you have as much success as I've had, you'll be ecstatic and wonder why the hell you waited so long. Please keep us all up to date with your progress, as I'm certain there are many others with your same concerns.
                    where does this go?

i am always telling myself that if I even once go back to the way I was before last march I will have to take antibuse. I am glad to be reading this thread and reminding myself how sick drunk and depressed I was.

That's a really good point morrison that I forgot to mention. Whatever you do Lucy make sure you have been totally alcohol free for a good week to make sure your body has flushed the alcohol completely out of your system. Even the slightest trace in some people can cause a reaction. If you are one of those people (and by god I hope you don't have the misfortune of finding out!!) then also be weary of products and foods that contain alcohol.

I never knew your med records were so scrutinized in the States! lol
