I just think it is sad if we have a pre-disposition to have this--I don't think it is any different from the other diseases that we each face except this one is self destructable..I don't think or can image that others with other diseases feel the great whelm of shame that we feel--I feel like I have way over expressed my feelings here but, this is what goes thru my mind everday --my question is--- If there was no alchohol & it wasn't a staple in our lives . what do you tnink you would have turned to----be gently please LOL thanks for listening

What do you think we'd use if Alcohol wasn't avaible
Hello to everyone--This is my first post & sort of scared of posting---My mind & my thoughts often go back to when I was a child & going thru difficult situations & trying to deal with them---I was to young to drink but probably would have like to have had one or something to ease the pain----I'm wondering if it could be possible that our DNA could contribute to our problem of addiction...There must be a reason why some can drink a few & some cannot----I think it would be worth a study----We always seem to blame one thing or the other but, What if it is in our Genes? I'm not trying to make lite of alochol & the abuse of Alcohol but, something just doesn't fit....I remember when I was younger & seeing a Dr he said that I was a potential aolchol... Frankly, I nerver understood his comments but,it always bothered me---But here I am today an Alcoholic..I know that even if any of this is true I still need to take charge if I want to be AF ....My big question is what do you or anyone think of how we may have dealt with stress & dificult times in our life when alcochol wasn't available( what do you think might have been your self rescuse....

What do you think we'd use if Alcohol wasn't avaible
Good morning
For me the simpler treats in life like chocs , going for a walk, listening to music may have sufficed!!!!!!!
I tried and stuck with alcohol as i wanted to be "accepted" and i nearly ended up "unacceptable".
If nobody was drinking and I wasnt either maybe we would be in a i more peaceful stae of mind ideally speaking.
However i feel people will always find a mind altering substance to use for relaxtion/escapism/ or whatever their agenda.
i dont think change is impossible for anybody..and I,m not suggesting its easy to stop the booze.
The evidence on this site is that people who have had the most horrendous experiences caused by alcohol have made fantastic changes in their lives. Many have discussed genetic predisposition etc but still by following this programme and mutual support considerably changed their thoughts and action in relation to booze.
So Glad you posted and I wish you good Luck.
Regards Cassy
So glad you have posted
i wish you well with your personal journey

What do you think we'd use if Alcohol wasn't avaible
Hi Queenie! Great first post! I think you will get lots of response to this....Its a good question. But one i can not really answer. I sometimes think i drink because i am weak. I have trouble stopping when i start!!! I don't have alcoholism in my family history so who knows if it is in the genes. Maybe i have started the troublesome gene!!!LOL
If there was no alcohol for me to hide behind, i may have got addicted to drugs i suppose. I do so love the high that A brings and the big high that coke brings!!! The problem with Alcohol is...it is soooo socially acceptable. But when someone leans on it too much, society is quick to shun you. It sucks!!
Anyway, wish i had more time right now to say more but.......you have set me thinking.....
post again, Bella xxx

Hi Queenie,
A child going through difficult situations is a risk for risky behaviour, period. Not your fault and not necessarily genetics that made you turn to alcohol. I am in the same boat, which is why I have "atypical" (lifelong) depression. Our brains were being formed during trauma, stress, an unhealthy environment, whatever.....it's a risk....somethings gotta give, ya know?
What else would we use, maybe sex? I know I am fearful of doing anything illegal so I overdo it in the sex and alcohol department, I also enjoy a few prescription medications, one that is addictive and I can honestly say I have never abused it.
We are looking for an escape, that's JMHO. I always feel like I want to run away even though I love my family sometimes I just can't deal with them. I need to be stronger and I'm working on it everyday.
:welcome:

Hi Bella & all---thanks for your response----I guess what I am really getting out of the forums is the honesty-----that to me is the most substancial (ms) effect we will ever know----Here's what I'm feeling is that your guys have been born & raised but you feel maybe you don't have any direction----that's understandable so don't freak out !!!!!!! I am very distrubed ( mentally yes too) but more than that----I think when we pass thru the mentality test we have learned a new venture of a good life in america....Don't let life cheat you !!!!,,,But no matter what we all try to think , the government wants us to have insurance & to be somewhat healthy. Who are they di8ctate our lives & make us feel like we are just a piece of shit.. sorry, but I just read my comment & it sucked------
I do have a lot of feelings but I guess I'm just not being connected-----

Queenie,
It will take some time and maybe a lifetime to sort out what's driving your need for AL. You are currently connected to AL because AL is so good at erasing those feelings of stress, self-doubt, anger and disappointment we all have to deal with on a daily basis. AL brings us together with others who enjoy AL's company for the same reason and we become connected, even hard wired to that wonderful euphoria of an emotionally care free existence. For those few hours, days, weeks, years, AL numbs out our accountability to those feelings as we slide along through life. Those highs are high and the lows are low.
Going AF is not a picnic and for me I have to now face and come to terms with all those feelings, emotions, fears and desires that have been swept away for so long by AL. Having an AF buddy mentor has helped me immensely. I have connected with his sobriety and the meaning of hope it has brought me. MWO and everyone here provides support and contrast to the experiences I am currently going through.
I even connect with you and your struggle, it really has meaning for me in my awareness of my own. You are in the right place at the right time, connect with it, you will be glad you did. PM me if need be, it will be OK.

Since quiting alcohol I've gained 10 lbs-so food!
I'm trying to replace it now with exercise and healthy eating. It's getting close to bathing suit season!
