Shikakai,
When I say alcoholism is treated like an illness, I am saying that employers are not allowed to discriminate against mental illness or substance abuse. If you miss work because of it, they must treat you the same way as if you had a heart attack or broke your leg; i.e., a medical illness. Also, insurance will usually pay for 30 days inpatient, and weekly outpatient therapy.
Poohbear, I am thinking of you right now. It is about 2:20 EDT. Good luck!

Yes Pooh it was Lakeside. They seemed like nice people, tho., strict about no reading anything but Alcohol treatment stuff, or viewing anything but alcohol movies. I was just in for a 24 hour detox, they wanted me longer but I declined.
You'll do fine hon.:l

I'd say it safe to say you are protected, but it may be best to consult your state statutes. From a New York ruling...
the Human Rights Law forbids New York employers from discriminating against individuals who have histories of or are in treatment for alcoholism or addiction so long as those individuals can "reasonably perform" the jobs they have or seek. http://www.hirenetwork.org/pdfs/Empl...ion%20(NY).pdf

In the past, most group insurance did pay for 30 days of Rehab and then up to 60 of follow up care. Now sadly because of the horrible state that Medical Insurance is in, most plans only allow for 2 weeks of in patient care, even though experts in the field believe that 30 days should be the minmum time and that 90 gives people an even better chance of recovery! Medical care in the US is definitely going backwards in many ways!

Thank you everyone for your wonderful words of encouragement - I have lots to say but I am just now leaving for my assessment. I will post as soon as I can to let you know how it went. Unfortunantly I have to come back to work after my appt as I told my supervisor I would so she would let me leave for this appt. I have not yet told her what it is about - I want to wait and find out more information first. Will post more later I promise
Hugs to ALL of you

Best of luck to you!
I would tell my employer I was leaving for a medical procedure and did not care to discuss the nature of it. I don't think they are allowed to ask what you are being treated for, we do have hippa laws.Patience has its limits. Take it too far, and it's cowardice.

I made the call
Just a quick note because I am back at work. Ok I am really starting to feel hopeless here. This is what they told me. They checked my insurance and my insurance will only cover treatment if it's at a hospital based facility - they are residential based, I am not sure what the difference is. On the one hand I am VERY fortunant to have insurance to cover it, on the other hand how in the world am I supposed to make ANOTHER phone call??? That one was so hard for me to make in the first place. Also they checked my insurance this morning after I made the appt - why couldn't they have told me this on the phone instead of coming in? When she told me this I just sat there and cried and cried and cried and told her I can't make another phone call - she just said 'hun yes you can' and she gave me the phone number to a hospital that has a program that is about half an hour from my town. Oh and she said that I can't go outpt because I am dual addicted - this is the first time I have admitted this was today but I am also addicted to codeine - I have a prescription for it for chronic pain but no I don't take it as prescribed so yea I am also addicted to that. I told her it's just codeine, she said it's an opiate and yes you can become addicted to it and when I cont to take that it just feeds my AL addiction. Dang I don't know what I'm going to do now. Will write more later - thank you again for all of your supportwhen you fail at something is when you learn and grow the most
