and because of the Scots/Irish mix, we hate ourselves.

Half Irish and half Italian. And both families in someway were typical of their heritage. My Irish side (father) had 7 children and almost each and every had big alcohol issues. Most died in their 40s and 50s. The Italian side always had some wine at the table but the food was much more important. They never got drunk. Most lived well into their 80s and 90s.

I am one of five kids -- I would say 2 out of the 5 have had alcohol issues with me, I think, being the most unruly alcoholic. Oh well, I suspect there is a strong genetic component in the alcoholism many of us experience. I remember having a beer when I was about 13 years old and all I wanted right then was ANOTHER BEER. Unfortunately I got my wish many, many, many times over throughout the years.:blush: <

My Doctor once looked at me and said, "you were born an alcoholic".

But today I am on day 6 -- feels pretty nice. Now we have to play a guessing game, can you figure out whose genes I got, Mom's or Pop's? Good luck to all :thanks:

Polish on my Dads side, Scottish and English on my Moms side.
Drinkers on both sides - mostly grandparents.
My Dad has always been in control of his drinking and my Mom could never handle her AL so she rarely drinks. Both my brothers and I have abused AL.

Me too. When I finally accepted that fact it was much easier to leave AL.

Swedish/German on Father's side. French Canadian on Mother's side. I am third generation alcoholic, if not more, mainly handed down on Mother's side - she is in her 70's now, and has had that glass of wine at her elbow as long as I can remember - but it was a real shock when as an adult I realized that I was by far outdrinking her....brother died from falling in a drunken stuper and hitting his head, hemoraged to death...

I can see that so many of us come from drinking backgrounds - regardless of nationality!

3rd generation aussie with German, Norwegian, Scottish and English. Cousins are heavy drinkers, but otherwise we have to look back 2 generations to find hard drinkers. Nature or nurture???...

English on mums side, Irish/Scottish on dad's side. All really big drinkers on my dad's side, no surprise there then. Dad's a functioning alcoholic, my great uncle keeled over and died in the pub, he was a big time alcoholic.

I was born in England, lived in Sweden for a year & US for 4yrs, my girls were born in the US, my son was born in England, they're half Jamaican. We're all living in England now.
