:hijacked: Sorry. OMG!! On the Gauley, raft gets tipped in a hole. Me and guide are only ones still in raft. Hubby gets sucked into hydrolic and when he gets spit out, he's confused and starts swimming, but swims back to the hole. ROFLMArseO - I can hardly type. I'm freaking out because I can't find him but another raft drug his arse into their boat. And I still love a river. :H I Would REALLY love to live on a river.

Bessie;312281 wrote: Well I am glad this thread has provoked some thought and opinions. Hippie - that's a close call. Do you think there might be a Kiwi hippie in a parallel universe!? Must be odd to think your life could have been completely different :H But then I guess all of our lives could have been totally different with only a small shift in circumstances.

I love the sound of so many of your US places to live. I've only been twice and that was to Vegas and New York - both amazing places but not anywhere I'd like to live. Think I would probably enjoy Wyoming, Utah, Montana but thats because I fancy the idea of one of these ranching holidays!! Other than that I know little about the places. I suppose America doesn't appeal as a permanent home as I associate it too much with the rampant consumerism I have come to hate here. Maybe that is wrong - I only really see the US through films and the odd tv programme though hubby has visited there a fair bit and never really says anything to dispel that view but then he goes to major cities. I am sure some of you will put me right and I guess there will still be places well out of the way from the mainstream malls and fast food joints.

I think the idea of NZ still appeals though really it is only a pipe dream atm. I am sure I will be googling 'emigration' a couple more times over the next few days as the weather is due to be just as bad as it was when I started this thread...... Ho hum. I'll be thinking of those of you waking up to sunshine streaming through your windows and wondering which pair of shorts to wear! And wrapping up in my coat and wellies and trying to appreciate what I have here..... which, in truth, is a lot of what I want and I am grateful for it. I have a home of my own, good relationships with my community, friends and family, freedom to run my own days, good health, a stable environment, enough money to live comfortably, a good relationship with my husband, the luxury of animals as pets as well as being lucky enough to be able to rear others in the way I want for food. I have an education, access to more information and entertainment than I can possibly use and I don't live in fear or poverty or famine. That is so much more than millions of other people and for that I really am grateful. Finally, for my biggest problem with alcohol, I have found here and have help and support and am working on dealing with it. That really is worth a lot.

Love to you wherever you are.

This is all a person could really every want. no matter where they live. Blessed Bessie!!!

PS, not all of us American's partake of, or agree with the consumerism that has defined and could even destroy our country.

You know you two thread hijackers are certifiable don't you? :H:H Why oh why would anyone want to put themselves in a little boaty thing and then try to get through a whole load of rapids that look pretty scary just from the bank??!! You could die or at least get very wet. Give me a several hundred pounds of independent (and occasionally bloody!) minded mammal and some nice static hedges and fences to jump at a gallop across fields any day!! Far safer. I much prefer it when the environment stays put and behaves itself and the transport is the tricky bit!! :H:H

PS Obviously I've never tried it. I might like it. But only in the same way I have never had root canal work and might like it.

Oh yeah, definately certifiable!:H (apologize again for the hijacking,...)

Thank God I'm just a boring old married woman now.. and no longer have to keep up with, or show up my boyfriends! LOL!

I do miss the adrenalin rush, but the "old lady float & bloat" with the doggie & stereo are pretty darn nice too! Still my favorite mode of travel...:h downstream...

Here's a blast from the past!

Do you like where you live??

Do I like where I live? I live in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. People come from all over the world to visit this island. So we are now a tourist based economy as it has changed from agriculture based economy. New housing developments begin at one million dollars and the residents here work in hotels. I don't have to deal with freeways or smog (yes, i grew up in southern California)
Does it feel right to me? No. I have not made any friends here. Don't have my family here (parents, inlaws, siblings) We moved here when I was 35. Now I am 51. I remember when it hit me that every phone call was about sunday school schedules, kids scouting activties, kids sports, kids performances. All my interactions are with aquaintances. I eat lunch almost daily with the same co workers but there is nothing outside of work. I listen to the new young teachers and they get together on the week-ends and do stuff. How does that happen? I used to "fantasize" about having a drink with a friend. Of course i drank by myself or with hubby. I've been to a few parties with Hubby's friends but I'd never see the wives again. I just don't get it. So I miss my family. And we spend tons of money that we don't have travelling to family every year. So I think if I lived somewhere else I'd be better off finanacially (I live in one of the most expensive places to live in America) This was a great place to raise kids but now they're grown so what next? And then, or now, I find I'm stuck. It's the retirement thing (another mystery). I always wanted to live in a bicycle friendly community (no traffick, no hills). I dreamed of living in a cottage ...think Peter rabbit. But would my life be different? Probably not. We are who we are.

We used to have another member that lived in Spain.

Darn, old age and years of alcohol abuse, I cannot remember her "name."

However, I believe she finally gave up and left. Her significant other would not join her in a reduced drinking lifestyle and like you, she said the whole community just considered drinking large quantities was the norm.

I miss her, she was a very warm and friendly member.

I hope she is doing well wherever she landed.

Anyone who remembers her? Jump on in and let me know.

                    Thanks!!

Do you like where you live??

Oh, and for me.... I live on an Island on the West Coast of British Columbia, Canada. You know, I have lived in a few other cities away from home over the years, and thought I would never want to go back.....

I am back, and this is the best place ever. I totally took for granted the beauty, the kind people, the communities, the outdoor activities, cleanliness, etc... when I was growing up.

All I can say is I am glad to be back home - and there is no place like home. I am starting to finally love where I came from and love where I live. I highly doubt I will ever move away again. I have seen what bigger cities are like and how the people are there. Most are jaded, stressed, fearful, etc... and it is different here. People say 'hello' to you on the street. There is such a sense of community.... for a so called large city, it is quite small. You can't go anywhere without seeing someone you know or use to know.

                      Ahhh... so nice, indeed!

You guys have inspired me to check for my home on Youtube and I found it!! The big spiky "rock" is Chimney Rock, about 15 miles from me. It is along one of the trails the pioneers took! I hope you enjoy this!
