    HELP - MAGS - ANYBODY!

Please somebody help me. I left the upstairs office window open and some stray Tomcat came in and pissed all over my house. Then one of my neutered tomcats marked over top of the intruders markings.
I have spent the better part of yesterday scrubbing the floors, baseboards etc. It still f....g reekes.

What biochemical substance is out there that will kill the smell? I even got some chemical from a commercial cleaning company, but it's not working. I had to soak the side of the couch with an enzymatic liquid that is supposed to work. The bloody couch has to go, I'm afraid.
Mags, you are the scientist; do you have anything in your lab that could fix my problem?

All the windows are wide open and I am freezing my ass off, but it still stinks to high heaven.

Please, anybody, what else can I do?

      HELP - MAGS - ANYBODY!

Been there L there is NOTHING on this planet that gets rid of cats piss smell except a long very long period of open window therapy sorry you are going to freez your arse off try and stay warm.A bit of lemon juice may help and BI carb soda sprinkled AND a steam clean eventually. There is a good steam cleaner i know in oz but unless you are desparate and own a jet I dont think they will jump on a plane in the next 24 hours . I feel for you that smell is the worst EKKKKKKKKK.

        HELP - MAGS - ANYBODY!

        Lori,

I'm afraid you may have a big problem....

I'm a Realtor and I've had a lot of experience with cat piss in houses. I've had people try everything under the sun to get rid of the smell. Nothing seems to work, especially if you have cats. Your cat will continue to "mark" his territory as long as he can smell the other cat's urine, making the problem escalate.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any product that will take the smell out to satisfy you, let alone your cat. My experience has been you have to get rid of anything that has been marked. This includes furniture and carpet. If the room is carpeted, get rid of it fast. If the urine soaks through the carpet and into the subfloor underneath, that needs to be cleaned, then a sealant sprayed on it to seal off any remaining smell. If it's into the subfloor too bad, it will have to be replaced (it's usually plywood or OSB).
I know this is not what you want to hear, but I can tell you there is no better way to make your house unsaleable than to have that cat piss odor hit you in the face as soon as you open the door....
Hopefully, it hasn't soaked into the floor yet...

        Good luck, Lori..

            oh noo!

once they mark their spot the scent stays for a long time. :cat: ususally a mixture of white vinegar and baking soda, shake it up and apply. Pepper flakes around doors and sills is good for chewing dogs, cats like to mark their territory so you have been pissed on pretty good. Mating urine is the worst, thats sound to be the piss type, the worst kind....

Oh you poooooooooooooor thing! Ugh! B********cats! Well, tom ones!

Um.....only thing I can think of is (appart from a nappy/diaper on your own cat!) is an air filtration system.....one you plug in the wall. Used to buy them from NSA in the US but I think you can get them 'over the counter' now. One with HEPA filtration. They are brilliant and take very little electricity. Yes, they cost quite a bit but still probably cheaper than new carpets and sofas and will go on and on for years as well.

Wishing you all the luck and that some of these ideas work!!

                HELP - MAGS - ANYBODY!

As a cat owner myself I have experienced this problem. The advice you have gotten from Don is the most complete solution unfortunately. I'm not sure how the solutions of lemon juice or vineager and sodium bicarb work as the two components react with each other upon contact giving the lovely volcano effect we all remember from junior high science fairs. Perhaps someone can offer some more details on how to prep the solution so this doesn't happen. I would suggest repeated cleaning with the enzymatic based cleaners and leaving the windows open (with the screens in of course). One of the handiest things I have ever purchased for this problem was a Bissell Spot Bot. That little bugger scrubs much better than I ever could, the best part about it is that you set it on the spot, press a button and walk away. It beeps when its done. If you were close to me I'd be happy to lend you mine but alas you're probably too far away for a quick jaunt.
                Suddenly I see
This is what I want to be
                suddenly I see
Why the hell it means so much to me.

I luv cats, but we had to get rid of a female that wouldn't quit p*ssing. When they start that they don't stop easily and it's impossible to live with, even I, a diehard cat lover couldn't put up with it, and I sleep with two cats and two dogs......oh and a husband I feel for you. :l

UH OH! :yuk: I am afraid I have to agree with CaptnJack and Chief! Had a male p!ss on a lovely couch of mine back in the 80's. Tried everything, including professional steam. Nothing worked! That thing probably still reeks in the land fill. So sorry, honey! Get it out of the house. Then you can start narrowing the smell down to the hard surfaces you have missed. It may take you awhile to find all of them, especially since you had two, completing males who tried to one-up each other!

                    Good Luck!

                        HELP - MAGS - ANYBODY!

UGH! So sorry Lori! We had a problem with unneutered males spraying all over our patio furniture and everything else outside a while back. There was absolutely nothing we could do but discard.... The smell stays for a very long time.

Here is a funny for you tho.... when I was about 16 I was dating this guy. Well, lets say that his mother's house was pretty nasty because they had a couple of unneutered cats. They sprayed everywhere.

When he first brought me over after 9 months of dating (I can see why he was so apprehensive) I sat on the couch (meanwhile thinking - how can people live like this!!) and one of the cats jumped up onto the back and sprayed right on my head! :egad:

I washed my hair in his filthy bathroom and then proceeded home to sanitize myself.

I never returned - however our relationship lasted 4 more years. :H

Sorry to hear this happened. I used a product called "Nature's Miracle" when my dogs got skunked. You can get it in pet stores and on line. Until then I recommend the vinegar and baking soda.

                          Good Luck!

                              HELP - MAGS - ANYBODY!

Thank you all for your good ideas and replies. AFM, if that cat had peed on my head, he wouldn't be walking today.

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh, I need a break. My knees are screaming and my back is surely broken.
I live in a vintage 1880 Victorian monstrosity with miles of high, ornate and painted baseboards. This is the second time I scrubbed the hell out of them. There are about 1000 sqf. of oak and cherry on the main floor and it is fairly easy to clean, but the sauce must have run in between the cracks. Thank God I have no broadloom. The second floor has a fairly new laminate wood floor. Unfortunately, where ever there was a puddle that I did not see right away, the floor has started to curl at the seems as the substrate swelled up. I should run the whole house through a car wash or fumigate with a mixture of Javex and Ammonia (please don't ever do that - it will kill you).

I googled for a receipe and found over 600000 entries. There must be a lot of piss cats out there. What I ended up using was white vinegar cut 50/50 with water. I sprayed that on first, mopped it off and then followed with a bristle brush dipped in Oxyclean and water. Then I rinsed this again with a vinegar mixture and dried it. Where I suspected that the urine had run behind the baseboards, I squirted an enzyme based solution and let it run down the back. Hopefully it will eat up what I couldn't mop up.

It's beginning to smell a lot better, but the couch still reeks and has to go.
On my poor oriental (the apple of my eye) I poured vinegar and water and wedged it between a wad of towels and newspaper to soak up as much as possible. I am praying it can be restored. Even the brass handles on my furniture are turning colour. What size bladder did this stray cat have?

The cellar is almost level bedrock and I really could not scrub it like a concrete floor. I poured almost a gallon of straight vinegar into the crevices and followed that up with Bisodium carb. I'll know in a day or two if that helps.
Anyway, by the time I am done, I should have earned a degree in urine removal. What would that make me? A Feline Urinologist?:damn::damn:
Here is a picture of one of the culprits>

                              Thanks all,
gotta get back to my bucket.
