    An interesting observation!

For the most part my backyard tends to resemble Noah's Arch.
There are lots of birds and squirrels, mixed in with the neighbors dogs and my 3 cats; the odd skunk and certainly racoons.

Last fall we noticed a very emaciated black squirrel that could hardly walk in a straight line. It kept falling and rolling over and took a long time to make it up a tree. It must have had a stroke or a head injury (my diagnosis).
I kept feeding it peanuts and somehow it survived our extremely harsh winter. It is still hobbling like a little drunkard, but seems to have adjusted to whatever ails him.
Now my observation. My young tom cat would normally chase anything on 4 legs that was smaller than him. When "Sideways" shows up in my yard, he just sits there and watches in quiet benevolence, as Sideways eats the peanuts that I hand out. My cat is almost protective and the other squirrels don't bother it either.

How come humans, the crowning glory of creation, do not show the same compassion for their fellow man, as the rodents and felines in my yard?

Any thoughts out there on this?

    Lori,

I think you are being too hard on humans. True, there are some humans that will prey on the weak and helpless, no argument.

But there are many, many more who strive every day to help those who can't help themselves. Many are on MWO and members here, some volunteers, some who chose a profession and have made a lifetime commitment to it and some who just do it as the natural course of walking through the day.

I loved the story. It is amazing when animals exhibit that kind of loving behavior. It reminds me that caring and kindness truly are not just human traits.

Thanks for sharing a nice story.

    Love,
    Cindi

country, and yes great to see your
          cats reaction...wouldnt it be great
to have the insight as to why?

            Lori

            What a good story.
Belle does that also with some animals......like a black cat???? :H

This is something I have experienced personally in the past month.
My DIL was involved in a 6 car crash on the interstate when traffic slowed down. She was not hurt , just the front of her car.
While exiting the interstate , I had a guy "rear in " me when I stopped to avoid being hit from oncoming traffic. He said it was MY fault!:H

Last night a marine corp mom that I talk with said her 18 year old daughter was involved in a 5-6 car chain reaction wreck much like the one my DIL had last week.

NOW.....this is what I think about why people don't behave more like "animals"
We are just TOO busy! We're in a hurry and don't have time, or think we don't have time to be kind or careful.
I am big on "Being still" for some periods duriing the day. It may just be a few minutes to stop and take some deep breaths and focus my mind on what is really important.

            Just my thoughts.
            Love you
            Nancy

I love squirrels! We have TONS of them jumping from tree to tree. Instead of throwing out the crusts from the loaf of bread (I buy flour free, prebiotic) I throw it out for them to eat. They provide hours of entertainment for my little one and I.

Animals are facinating. We brought a new puppy home. She was about 1.5 lbs. I have three cats and another dog. The dog was jealous at first but took to her fine. The cats NEVER had a problem with her, and she is quite a pest, always biting at them and crawling over them, yet, they have never so much as hissed at her or growled. It's like they KNOW this is a sister to be, like Rocky their other dog "brother".

One of my cats attacks ANY AND ALL dogs that come into our yard if they seem threatening. She is 25lbs and jumps on them and rides them with her claws.....they run for the hills.

So how do they know the difference?
