    swimming

Can I share something with you all that I am very proud of?? I went swimming last night, and am almost back to my old Triathlon swim time. I had been getting pretty slow, up to 12 minutes for a 500m stint, because of excess fatigue and sick, wine limbs. But last night, I did one 500 in 11minutes, and the next one in 10min 45sec. I was soooooo pleased -I stopped and yipped!!! (Good thing the pool was pretty empty!) I think I did the 1500 on my last Tri at 32.5 minutes or something -not exactly a speed demon or Tri-winner, but that is good for me.

I attribute this directly to not drinking AL every night. When I don't drink, rest is better - even with insomnia - and I also don't smoke as much, only 2/day. I must say, although I haven't been perfectly AF since May 1, I am extremely happy with this one bonus side-effect. Yay!

    Thankyou MWO!

That's great Peanut. I did a short one 3 years ago (and it has been downhill ever since). I hope to get back into shape and do another one someday.

Here in B.C. we do open water swims, not that mamby pamby pool stuff. :H Please tell me they don't use dugouts. :eeks:

              Hey Mohun!
Ha!! No dugouts, but there is a truly short supply of nice lakes out here, unless you go farther north. However, there is a little lake just out of town where the big Tri is held, one of those oxbow lakes - full off weeds and reeds and leeches. Yuck!!!! There are a couple other small triathlons, and they are in town in the pools. I haven't been doing them for a few years, since I had a wicked outbreak of plantar faciitis, then a heel spur, plus a bad knee - Aiy!! Then ended up with Morton's Neuroma (don't ask!), and my chiropractor doesn't want me running anymore, as I have a rib that comes out of its facet from a car accident. I don't think I have very good body alignment! But I still do run some running, with my drinking (not me)/running club! Swimming is the best though - no jarring on the old bones!!

Get out those running shoes and swim suits!!

peanut that is fabulous progress. There is definitely a link between cardio and al use....i feel the difference too although I'm not anywhere near your level of athleticism. Keep up the great work!

As an ex-athlete and still training I found my performance, strength and body composition has improved enormously since going AF. My fitness was going really downhill before and I was getting a 'belly' - when I trained on days between binges I felt like I was dying.

Now my lifts are going back up, running and cycling going well even did a 5K race last week - planning another one soon.

Suppose I class myself as a runner-turned-bodybuilder! My next goal is a 6 pack please.

                      way to go!

I did a couple of baby-tri's in 2006/07 .... blitzed everyone in the water but they all overtook me on the run!:boohoo: I use to love running, but my knees are shot after having wrecked them playing soccer and having to have some surgery. I rely a lot on swimming to both keep me sane and as the only form of aerobic activity that I can do without my body falling apart!

Anyway, I've been thinking about trying to run again and do a full tri this summer (which here is another 6-7 months away!). I have wondered how much my perceptions of my inability are to do with knees as opposed to alcohol consumption.

any thoughts and advice welcome - thought I might try 1km tomorrow!

                        swimming

A sports therapist told me last year that AL dehydrates your joints - and can lead to pain. Whenever I was sobering up after a binge I would get all sorts of aches in knees and feet (aside from any actual AL bruises/injuries).

So perhaps try a little joggin, work up slow and build up quads using weights to help provide support.

                          Peanut,

You SHOULD be proud!! No only are you kickin' Al's butt, but anyone who pushes themselves athletically gets my kudos!!

                          You, too, Mohun, and UKBlonde!!

I went for a one mile walk with my daughter-in-law and granddaughter yesterday.

The 6 year old kicked our butts. Ran up and ahead and back, skipped backwards while talking, etc. :H

But I figure any exercise is better than none and I had some quality time with two of my favorite girls.

                          Love,

                            I'm tired just reading this!

When the time comes to get fit as well as AF I'll know who to come to for inspiration.

The best exercise is that which can be incorporated into your life - Cindi, walking is excellent and making it part of family fun together even better. Little things like that - leaving the car behind, using a bicycle to nip to the shops or get to your favourite coffee place can really be no extra hassle and really make a difference.
