Folks - I'm laughing at some of these stories. You know, laugh to keep from crying. But, aside from the tragedy, some of them are hilarious. Well, tragedy and comedy are flip sides of the same coin, aren't they?
Doggy - how did you do it? I can't imagine how embarrasing and having no place to escape to.
Bridge - it is amazing that we're alive to tell the tale. Sadly, there are many who aren't. Or, just as horrible, living in a constant state of struggling with their schizophrenic alcoholic brain - arguing in their heads about the pros/cons of drinking.

When you wake-up the next morning with a huge gash in your head that requires 18 stitches and have no idea what the hell happened.
When you wake-up so hung over you start drinking again to make the pain go away.

You know you're an alcoholic when...
When I wasn't invited to my older daughter's NICA Graduation Showcase performance because she refused to have me there in case I drank beforehand. She invited my first husband (her dad) and his second wife instead and she (my daughter's stepmother) texted me telling me what a great triumph my daughter had been. She (2nd wife) did it out of kindness, not out of any spite, but I actually felt my heart break because I had missed such an important event in my daughter's life.
That was a few years ago, but the grief is as intense as it was that night.
No-one to blame but myself.:h Mish :h

You know you're an alcoholic when...
When my younger daughter, who has a stunningly beautiful and powerful voice, told me she will never sing in front of me again, because I would get emotional and cry when I was drinking heavily because it was so beautiful and I loved her and my older daughter so much, and I was screwing up their lives and mine with alcohol...and I was so desperately unhappy because I was losing everything I loved, and still I couldn't stop drinking... and yet, they love me still. Even when I couldn't love myself.
So proud of them, so wish I could have been the mother I wanted to be.
Looking back, I wonder how I couldn't accept at the time that I am an alkie.:h Mish :h

Mish, I didn't have any kids so I escaped situations like you're describing about your daughters. Maybe you could think in your mind that you have helped them escape AL seeing what it did to you??? They must be proud now that you're sober. I know you can mend these fences and maybe you'll end up with a more profound relationship with them in the long run. Sometimes we can't see it, but down the road something could actually be better because of this suffering. Sending you peace and strength.

You go to the local store at 10am and ask for a pack of cigarettes and the assistant asks 'Anything else, sir?' and you both know that your reply will be 'Oh yeah, and can I have a bottle of [budget label] vodka please'.
:argh:Always remember you're unique, just like everyone else
