I used to have this problem... The lab is okay, but the cat, a silent
female bombay who adopted me at the local rescue center, used to pester
the heck out of me. I generally sit in a partial lotus on the couch in the
" room that no one goes in ", i only ever sit here to meditate. One time
I was fairly into it, and i felt as though Jasmin, the cat, was ready to pounce
unto my lap. I had had my hands together, one on top the other, in my lap,
and as i felt her ready, i moved my hand to block her jump. She had not
really jumped, but was about to and she released the coiled energy by
slamming her back feet into the hardwood floor.

At this point i opened my eyes and started to laugh at the look i got
from Jazzy. She was so supprised that i had suddenly moved to block
her leap and yet she seemed annoyed at her inelegant motion.

The look was " I meant to do that, and I don't want to be there anyway,
        so there"

The laughter was a cool way to end the meditaion, and she [ Jazzy ]
seems to know, now, to leave me alone on the couch, sitting with my eyes closed.
Although, at times she will saunter out and sit in the chair next to me. I
think they like the meditators' energy field, a kind of pet sangha i guess.

WIP, I just read your explanation of how to start meditation. I am going to try it in about an hour- I have some grocery shopping to do but there is no one home and this is going to be the perfect opportunity. I have a timer I can use. I will report back on my results. I don't know too much about meditation but I know enough to know of its benefits. Do you generally choose the same time each day to meditate? K

            Anybody into Mindfulness Meditation?

Just picked up this thread, and tho I don't understand everything, am going to investigate. I feel I'm overweght (docs don't agree) and have MS, osteroporosis, osteoarthritis. This is very hard for me as I have always been super active. Broke 7 bones from my knee to my toes in January, and they are not healing, so I need a way to involve my body and mind, without taxing my body. I LOVE the hypnotherapy tapes I have - got the longest, best sleep of my adult life with them. Am truly starting at the beginning. I'm going to my cabin tomorrow (meant to go today, but too tired)and that's the place I feel closest to God, so I'm taking my new yoga DVD and spending time only with nature and 5 psyco dogs. Can't bring myself to go alone, they're my security blanket. (plus we have bears).Adore my Hubs, but he gets on my nerves after a while, so I need some me time. I'm very ignorant about all this so I may be coming back to you for help. I need to settle my soul.

I am no expert, but i get the best results with my practice when i do it at
the same approximate time every day, and at the same spot [ not where
you sleep, if possible ] and wait 2 hours after a meal [ like swimming ].

obviously all this is not possible given vacations and travel at work
and the like, but practice every day, at least once a day, for the best
              benefit.

oh and use a clock if you must, but don't set an alarm

Sam, I LOVE the story about your kitty! It's funny, it has always seemed to me that my cats sit meditation with me. If they stay awake, they are always sitting nearby, and remain still until I get up. The dogs, on the other hand, just lie down and sleep. I guess dogs don't really need to meditate.

I agree with you, Sam, that it's good to create a routine for meditation: approximately the same time of day (most people say morning is best), and the same place, not necessarily perfectly quiet but at least so that nobody will come up to you and ask questions, and where you will not be answering the phone etc. And sitting every day is more important than the length of time... even if you only sit for 5 minutes, it helps to create the habit/routine.

Some people use various kinds of timers... an alarm clock or kitchen timer is OK, in my experience, so long as you find a way to muffle the sound (in a box, under a big pillow, etc.). You can buy special "meditation timers." I really don't like looking at a clock to see how long I've been sitting, so I almost always use some kind of timer. If you are sitting with a group of people, one person always serves as the time-keeper, and rings a bell to start and finish the sitting periods.

Kriger, Ruby, I'm glad you are interested in giving this a try. You might consider the excellent book, Mindfulness in Plain English, if you want a full-length explanation written by a very good teacher. Probably most important of all: don't expect to feel any particular way. Meditation is not an instant pathway to any kind of feeling or emotional states, whether they be "good" feelings or otherwise. Anything at all might (and will!) arise in our minds and bodies during meditation, and the idea is for us to observe all of it with equanimity, lack of judgment, lack of reactivity. It is this gentle observation that is the essence of meditation. When we bring it to our daily lives (and daily formal practice helps us do that), then we gradually bring peace into our lives, as well.

I came home to a house full of people and dinner cooking is in the works. I think I will try tomorrow morning when I get up. I arise way before anyone else in the house so that should work well. I am looking forward to it.

Have you ever heard of a chi machine, WIP? I have one and haven't been using it; I need to get that back into action, as well. You lay on the floor with your ankles on the machine; when you turn it on your body moves in the way a fish moves through water, kind of an S formation. It is great for aligning all of your chakras. I think it would do me good to clear some of my chakras.

Never heard of that, Kriger, but there are LOTS of things I have never heard of! It sounds kind of fun. And who knows what my chakras might be up to, these days... !!

                        Meditation

Thanks, Sam. I put on a great face all the time, and everyone expects everything from me. As o2m says, I have a big ole' heart, and feel like I need to be all things to all people. It's very hard for me to do anything for myself, snd this trip is vital to me. Doing what I want, when I want, having peace and quiet, even with all the dogs is very important to me right now. There's a place out on our deck, overlooking a valley and a rushing mountain stream, that feels like heaven. I'm going to spend most of my trip there, just not being torn apart by everyday life. Need it really badly now, and meditation seems to be a vacation for me. Hubs is begging for food now, so, I'll get that done, with the plan for a peaceful few days. Thanks again:thanks:

Det, there are catalogs these days that are FULL of that stuff. All kinds of neuro-this and neuro-that kinda machines, none of which have any solid research indicating that they are effective for anything, but all of them promising AMAZING results. Brain wave stuff is very hot these days.

O.K. I'm truly addicted to this place and you guys! I'm leaving in a few hours and will miss you all, even the grumps (you know who you are!(joke)). Someone has to promise to fill me in when I come back! Can't wait to start my meditation. I have a new firebowl on the deck, so might build a little fire late at night and try starlight meditation. It would be cool to have someone else there who is on the same journey as me, but I guess I need to do this alone. Besides you all live a zillion miles away. I have to start putting my garden to bed, too, and have a friend who'se coming to move some boulders from the drive. Anyway, think of me. No cheering because I won't be here to make my long and rambling posts!
