    Screw the Olympics

Thanks again One 2 , your so lovely . Cap , dont I need it to get into something like that? I suppose as well im trying to prove something to myself ,im the youngest of 6 and the only one who hasnt got one! I left school and had no interest , marridge ,mortages or any of the shit that bogs you down! However 4 kids later im well and truly bogged down and I suppose I feel that these years bringing up the kids will pass anyway and id like to put the time to good use and work towords something . Now I know bringing up the kids is rewording and all, but its also very hard on my ole wondering head and can also be mind numbingly boring and I feel like im really doing something for myself working towords this degree! Hope this makes sense.

                  Screw the Olympics

                  I love the Olympics
Even the silly events that nobody cares about. I watch them all; well, all I can catch. When I was a kid and it was all amatuer, the ideal struck a chord with me. Now, all but the contestants from the very poorest countries seem to be milking the system for every penny they can get. That's why China got the nod in the first place. The "world" knows it can make a buck or two. I will be watching and cheering on all the underdogs; people from places I have never heard of. All those surprise winners who have a family to feed and the ones who are trying their hearts out for the privilige juist to be there.

                    Screw the Olympics

                    Popeye,

                    Thank you for posting that.

I have a dear friend who worked so hard to be in the Olympics. I mean every free second of his life was devoted to training and working. Every free second. It was his dream.

Carter boycotted the year he made it.

                    Grrr.

I love the Olympics, too. I also go for the underdog. Geez. The underdogs do more than any of us mere mortals can. They have all worked every free second they had in their lives to be there. Every second.

                    Love,
                    Cindi

Oh, and they are ALL winners just for being there. No joke.

                      Screw the Olympics

I agree that China should never have been allowed to host it, but we can't take it out on all the innocent, hard working athletes. I will be a supporter of the sports, not the politics. Isn't that what the Olympics is about?

                      Great post, Popeye!

                        Screw the Olympics

I agree, China never should have been given the olympics. The chinese government has never cared about even the most minor of civil rights. In fact the Chinese government even in modern times is abusive and cruel to its own people. Also in order to be granted the Olympics, China had to agree, among other things, to clean up their air. Well, not only did the Chinese not make the air better, it is worse than it was at the time they recieved the Olympics. This is so horrible for our international athletes!

As far as athletes getting sponsorship. I honestly have no issues with this at all in regards to olympic athletes. It is honest business. Training and equipment takes money and time. It takes years of hardship and hard work before an athlete can expect and endorsment or sponsorship.

On the other hand pro athlets, football players, basketball players etc. go after every endorsement they can get, on top of multi-million dollar salaries. The NFL, NBA and the teams make billions while an average wage earning parent cannot affort to take their children to a game! Athletics and Athletes have become Big business. Very little, if anything is left to true sportsmanship.

As for who I would root for? I would not choose an athlete on the basis of who is the most poor. Though I must admit, when I hear a story of an athlete that has overcome unbelievable odds to get to the top of his/her game.......I tend to root for them!

                          Inspiration

Kate and others...You may have already heard the inspirational story about the young man who carried the flag for the US team during the opening ceremonies in china. He was a 'lost boy" from Darfar who was adopted by a US family after escaping Sudan and spending 10+ years in a refuge camp. He eventually became a US citizen and qualified for the Olympics this year. Wow!

I don't think China should be hosting the olympics, but I did watch the opening ceremony and it was fantastic, although the commentator did give us some interesting facts, one of which was that out of the 20 most polluted cities in the world 16 of them are in China. If only they had spent as much money on cleaning up their country as they have on the Games.
