Drank before I found out I was pregnant

nycgal........I drank before I knew I was pregnant and a little bit afterwards. I also took xanax because of tremendous anxiety (my father died during this time) and everything turned out ok. My daughter is a beautiful 18-year-old now. Please try not to worry.......I know it's hard. For some reason people (although not all here) want to tell women the worst. It's like they feed on what can go wrong. This just isn't the case. Please.......try and relax. Hugs to you.

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

      Hi NYC,

I'll echo the earlier posts - your baby will be fine. But here's a wrinkle - you might want to stick around here and stay in touch with us. Consider ordering RJ's book and doing some reading. The reason I mention this is that once the baby arrives, there will be added stress in your life. They are miracles and beautiful creations of God; but they cry, they are wholly dependent on you, and they can drain even the most energetic mother. That's when that glass of wine/or2/or3 starts looking pretty good and you're well on your way to problems with alcohol. Best to use these last few months of adult time to examine your relationship to booze and get your head and heart where it needs to be.

There are quite a few Moms here, so I'm sure you'll get plenty of well-intentioned advice!! Have an enjoyable pregnancy (oxymoron for some) and let us know how you're doing. Congratulations and God bless.

      V.

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

        Hi NYC gal,
I was 8 weeks along when I found out I was pregnant -- I thought I was only 5 wks though. In fact, my pregnancy and my early MWO days occurred at the same time -- I had found this site, talked to hubby, bought the supps -- then days later found out I was pregnant -- so returned supps to the store. I posted my initial fears of pregnancy and of drinking in those early weeks, partially because I wsan't sure I wanted to be pregnant, so had to make that decision. So many members had helpful infor for me. If I can find any of my old posts in the archives, i'll let you know (this was Jan. 2006). (of course, all the extra drinking over the holidays, too) Well... my son will be 2 at the end of this month, and he is totally fine. I drank a little bit in the later months of my pregnancy -- a glass occasionally. I found that I really didn't want to drink while I pregnant -- in fact, that's what tipped me off that I might actually BE pregnant ("hey, this is weird, I don't want to drink -- something must be wrong with me!")
Thanks for sharing your concern, and as Vera-b said, there are many moms on this site who can readily understand the pressures -- and joys -- of motherhood. Please let us know what we can do to help.

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

I also drank with both of my pregnancies before I knew I was pregnant; the guilt and anxiety was intense! But my obstetrician said it was the most common worry expressed to him by his patients, and the fears were nearly always unfounded. I still worried a lot, and I'm not a doctor, but I'm sure you are ok. Obviously it's good to stop, and like others, I had no cravings for alcohol once I knew I was pregnant.

Of course, the night my first child was born, I drank an entire bottle of Veuve. Oh well! My kids are both healthy.

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

            NYC

When i became pregnant with my 2nd, I didn't know it. I drank for about 3 weeks every night, and more than you. when I found out I was pregnant I was so scared. I fessed up to my doctor, and he said this..."Anything you can tell me that you did in the first 3 weeks, outside of major x-rays does not worry me. The embryo is not attached at that point so what you injest does not hurt the baby". i worried anyway. My son is now turning 17 and is number 7 in his class of 840 students!!!!

Relax, don't drink, have coffee, artificial sweetner, or sushi, or fish with high mercury content, and don't clean any cat litter boxes, and everything should be just fine.

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

I still drank coffee -- about 2-3 cups in the AM. Giving up that would have been worse than giving up beer!

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

My oldest girl was concieved on Zoloft - I remember my midwife asking me why I was taking it when I wasn't using birth control....well she is absolutely perfect and beautiful.
I think I went to another midwife office, and they told me not to worry, and it was a nice pregnancy.
                I still worried.
                Everything was fine.
                I had 2 more.
Please keep posting, I love to hear about babies!

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

                  Hey NYC gal,

I'm in the exact same boat as you; found out a month after drinking pretty heavily that I was pregnant. Now my son is 17, a 3.8 GPA student at a private college-prep high school, and a
wonderful, talented, awesome person to be around. I'm not saying that people shouldn't be careful -- I didn't touch a drop once I found out I was PG. However, I started drinking again several years ago (in the evenings, after my son was in bed), and THAT'S the part I recommend you not repeat! I'm on my way out now, thanks to this site and support of others. But I really think your baby will be fine -- there are prenatal tests as I'm sure you know, if you are still worried.

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

                    Same here. ditto ditto...

Drank quite a bit before I found out. Worried like hell. Kids (2) are fine... too young to have rankings in class, but doing just swell in grade school, very sharp senses of humour, very creative, musical, athletic, bla bla bla.

Please try to calm down and look forward to the perfect little person you will welcome into your life.

                    And take vera-b's advice.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

Hi Nycgal - I have three girls 14, 9 and 18 months and I did not find out I was pregnant until I had drank a few times prior. They are all wonderful and healthy. With my little one I was worried only for the fact that I was 41 when I conceieved and had a few drinks as well. They test the crap out of you if you are over 35...sigh. Please don't worry yourself. The stress is much more harmful to the munchkin, so relax and just do not drink while you are pregnant. I never found it hard to stop while I was preggo. In fact I welcomed it every time I was pregnant - AF all the way! I guess I should start pretending I am pregnant...now there's an idea! Anyway, good luck friend. We are all here for you and best of luck with the baby - you will be FINE!

Drank before I found out I was pregnant

I can't thank you all enough for your stories and encouragement. I too like some of you, have not found it hard to stop drinking at all, since I found it. I'll be sure to keep my drinking in check when the baby comes. I can only hope and pray that I'm lucky as all of you and my baby is fine. Thanks again. Sharing your stories really meant a lot.

Can only back up what others say. I drank up till found was preg both times, then stopped cold, no beer for ten months each time, easiest thing I ever did. My babies both wonderful, healthy and clever. Please just enjoy being pregnant, is v special time, only (probably) happens once or twice, make most of it!! Good luck.
