Hello All,
Don't have a whole lot to add to this thread - makes for very interesting reading. Nancy, I particularly appreciate your giving some background. I've found it's all I can do to read a few threads and respond, making sure to welcome newcomers in the hours available each day. I'd love to take a few days to dig through the archives, but just haven't had the luxury of that much time. With that said, I agree that it's so very important we encourage each other whether succeeding or falling down.
I haven't read a post yet that called for a celebration when someone drank and was unhappy about it. And for those that have had a drink but felt it was controlled, the congratulations were more that they exercised caution and control - not that they had a drink. That encouragement helps all of us to keep up the good fight, whether that be total abstinence or some controlled modding. Too many times we use a failure to give up completely, and failures are some of our best teachers.
RJ said it well in her book that there are all kinds of problem drinkers, and to expect a one-size-fits-all plan to work universally just doesn't make sense. Perhaps that is why, despite it's long history, groups like AA have not made a serious dent in the sheer numbers of problem drinkers today. So, stepping down from my puny soapbox, I'll thank all who have both failed and succeeded before me. I will continue to read your posts, and if I don't agree with you, well, I'll take your well-intentioned words under advisement . . .
V.
