I like the fact that Obama has chosen his responses to McCain and has refused to get into attacks thus far. I fear that he may have to, though, since people in this country seem to respect negativity more than dignity.

I am afraid of someone trying to assassinate Obama too. I pray that I am just being paranoid.

I have friends who are voting for McCain and have a very good argument as to why they are doing so. It just doesn't resonate with me. I don't like the way this country is run, and I want to see change.

In response to CJB - I hope that this election does not disintegrate into a black vs. white thing. It's not the 50's for God's sake. Bush has screwed our country up so badly that I would welcome, with open arms, an African American, a Women or as you stated "Queen" to help us...it is about what is good for the country and our children's future. Not what gender, race or sexual preference one may have. Obama may be black, but race is not the issue - he is a leader, regardless of race, that in my opinion, can pull the US out of the terrible, sorry state it has spiraled into thanks only to Bush and his demented sidekick Chaney. OK, not going to post any more on this thread for fear of getting banned.....

Agree, KBCE. What's scary to me is that so many working-class white people are vehemently right-wing. You should read the comments on the Web site for the newspaper in the town I grew up in. VICIOUS attacks on Obama, wild speculation on how he's going to raise taxes like 900 percent and destroy American civilization as we know it. Comments like "Bush is a great leader, we're fighting the terrorists over there so we don't have to fight them here." gag ... There are so many people that don't follow the news because oh my, the mainstream press is so dreadfully liberal, so they get ALL their information from right-wing talk show blowhards and believe it as gospel. They don't want to hear a single fact because that's too "liberal"... OK, end of rant

You're right. In the city I live in it is predominately white Irish Catholic and bigots galore. Horrible. I am from Southern California (5th generation) and was just not brought up that way. I am white, Irish and Catholic, however the view points of the "oldtimers" here in the hood make my head spin. Talks of Obama being the Antichrist, blah blah blah. Makes me want to gag. Dex -- I have always found this to be really puzzling as the Republicans are all about helping the rich and screwing everyone else. My (step) father-in-law is a rabid republican who listens to hate radio and thinks America started going downhill when women started having careers (seriously)!?!????? I always feel like saying to him: Yeah, and what has Bush done for you? Diesel and gas prices are higher (he drives a huge truck), food is more expensive (he shops mostly at Costco) and his healthcare benefits don't pay for as much as they used to (he's a senior with increasing health issues). So what's so great about that?

My theory is that there's a lot of scared people out there who feel threatened by anyone who A) has gone to college; B) has opinions different from theirs; C) is interested in / or respects European culture and / or D) is a female with a brain. (Sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone, just my 2 cents here -- probably going to get myself into trouble)

On another topic: did anyone notice that at the end of Bill Clinton's speech last night the band broke into "Addicted to Love" (Robert Palmer)????? Someone screwed up big time there ... I found it amusing yet oh so inappropriate ...

I once had a male, white colleague who started ranting that white men are getting the shaft and being screwed over by women and minorities. This was a man who had worked in the same job, for which he was woefully unqualified, since college, never been passed over a promotion, had very little contact with minorities in his lifetime. I mean, WTF ??

I am most definitely going to vote Obama. It is the only chance we have! Four years of McCain would be just as bad, if not worse than 4 more years of Bush, more lies, deception, and national debt. If those are "old fashioned principles"....whos principles I ask? As far a morals, John McCain was engaged to Cindy, before he was divorced from his first wife. Do I care, No. But, if moral values are the issue, than I guess this should matter.

McCain has a commercial that says if Obama is voted in, he will raise taxes and oil will go to $6 a gallon. George Bush has put this country in the worst financial position since the country was born. He turned a surplus into the largest deficite. Who does McCain and the Republicans believe are going to pay the bill for this debt???? If they have their way, it will be the Middle Class. Oh, and of course Bush is pushing for off shore drilling, now, his family is heavily invested in the oil business! Perhaps the Bush family she pay 36% of their wealth in taxed to pay down the debaucle of George W!

As for welfare, I agree, it is badly abused and needs reform. Obama has spoken of a plan for welfare reform, has McCain? One last thing, if we want to brush off the importance of this or any other election because we prefer to believe they are all liars.......what is the alternative. Our system is not perfect, people are not perfect, but, it is the system that we have, and it is important to think, know the issues and to vote.

Good points, Kate. I don't understand people that gain their opinions from political advertising. These ads are ALWAYS slanted if not downright deceitful. If you ever need an answer on one of the claims from the candidates' ads, FactCheck.org is an excellent and nonpartisan place to get answers. And NOBODY has a real answer to the oil problem. We use way too much, are horribly dependent on foreign oil, but the amount we could actually get on our own soil is miniscule compared to our current needs.
