Thanks Luk. No surprise this is my pet peeve. We are actually on somewhat of a third-world level in a number of things. Health care is one; another is our crumbling infrastructure. Utterly bizarre attitudes that we will become (horrors!) a "socialist" country if we actually take care of some of our citizens that aren't the rich are part of what keeps us at the bottom and what will continue driving us into the dirt.
If I have a health-care crisis, I am financially ruined. And I HAVE health insurance !

Luka, I have a very dear friend who is a school superintendent is Tuscon, he is totally disgusted with McCain and he too believes that McCain is out of touch and useless. to add insult to injury, with the huge problem in AZ with Illegals, McCain is promissing them amnesty in order to secure the Hispanic Vote. speaking of education: why is it that dirt poor countries like India, Malaysia, China, etc etc keep pumping out large volumes of very educated kids with virtually no budget for it. Just goes to show that the missing ingredient is NOT money...it's attitude.

*Funding is part of the problem, teachers are poorly paid and over worked. Many of the good ones are forced to leave teaching for the private sector. Other countries, see education as high priorty. But, I also completely agree with you Det on the fact that a lot of parents do not encourage their children to become educated. Parents simply do not take the time needed to work with their children in the home!

ok, here's Det's magical answer to fund education and affordable (but not socialized) health care.

-fire 50% of all government employees. our government was supposed to be a necessary evil. NOT a bloated power hungry machine that uses it's citizens as fuel.

ever spend much time in Federal and State government offices? You'll be treated to huge volumes of employees sitting on their fat asses yacking about what they saw on TV last night....hour after hour. As the phones ring until the machine records the frustrated callers.

*I do not know the exact percentage that needs to be cut, but there definitely need to be cut backs.....and congress and the senate and other branches should not be able to continue giving themselves rediculous raises, while the rest of the country is forced to cut back!

-use welfare programs ONLY for truly desperate households...not for 3rd generation professional welfare addicts.

*I completely agree with this one. But, I also want to say, sometimes, even with the best planning and hard work, people can fall on hard times. I do think that Obamas Back to Work plan holds a lot of merit!

-stop extending our military all over the world (yes, I'm a Republican and I said that). keep them home, save money and put up some borders that are truly effective. If they get bored they can erect windmills for electricity.

*ABSOLUTELY!!! And...consider diplomacy and the Peace Corp rather than constantly writing checks for Foreign Aid. (which in many, many cases is sqandered by thugs and never reaches the people for which it was intended) Why the Peace Corp...create more US jobs and teach people how to help themselves and become self sufficient!

Lucky, my former boss is a retired bigshot DC lobbyist (a big name you may know but mum's the word). He told me stories about "real" upper echalon politics that would make you barf. if we think for one second that politicians give a rats ass bout us little people we are living in a dream. He even got drunk with the Clintons a couple times. what a scary pair. I used to be somewhat politically active myself but after finding out how filthy the whole game is I've lost the stomach for it. I still get riled up a bit (obviously) so perhaps i should go chop some garlic

I have actually had government employees tell me they are told not to work too much because then they will not be able to hire additional head count. So, they work about 3 hours a day and goof off the rest of the day. I get so many silly chain letters and silly jokes forwarded to me from government employees that I know they are not working. And there is no oversight! It is encouraged! I love that Sarah sold the jet, fired the security detail and driver, and fired the personal chef. That is where the $ for health care, education, roads needs to come from. And she took on her own party.

Bottom line is I think all have expressed themselves well and I respect all opinions when expressed as they have been.
