Backing up a few pages, there were a couple of posts about moderated boards. Based on my own experience which is limited, it works well IF there are clearly established rules about posting to the board (the types of posts allowed, the correct sections to post them in, conduct guidelines toward other members, etc.). Where rules are either not clearly established, or not consistently enforced, then moderation can fail due to percieved favoritism and the like.

Where moderation exists strictly to enforce the rules - not to interject the personal opinions of the moderators (where action it taken regarding someone elses post) it works very well.
