We received a call from our son while still at camp that Cody was down, panting in his stall when he went to feed this morning. For those of you that are not aware about horses, they cannot not throw up and can develope an often deadly case of colic... It is when the gut has a severe disturbance in this case the gut was very likely twisted requiring open gut surgery on a young healthy horse... You see Cody was even having a hard time chewing his has as his old teeth wore down so badly.. I was having to feed processed cubes of alfalfa as well as completer pellets.. He would eat some of the hay but not very effeciently. Cody as alot of you know just celebrated his 30th Birthday on our 24 wedding anniversary. What can I say.... if I was a horse, I'd be happy living the life he has... I'm not going to turn to the bottle guys... I'm just reflecting on his life at this time and feel so lost sort of. We have to go back out to camp after laying him to rest later on as we simply loaded our dogs and locked up the camp.
My Gramma who has been gone now for 6 years used to feed sugar-free Trident mints to Cody when she would visit him. Just as Cody was being put down I looked up and asked Gramma to take care of him for me until I get there. Just to have him no longer in pain is a true relief. He had been down and rolling for quite sometime as the raw rub marks on him head and hips showed. We shall miss his morning and evening greetings but will feel him on the wind. I just want you all to know about this handsome, gentleman.
