    TOPAMAX

:upset:I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED. I WENT TO THE DR, AFTER READING THE BOOK, IN HOPES HE WOULD PRESCRIBE THE TOPAMAX. HE NEVER HEARD OF IT BEING USED FOR ALCOHOL PURPOSES AND WOULD NOT GIVE IT TO ME. HE TOLD ME HE DIDN'T THINK TAKING TOPAMAX AND ALCOHOL MIXED SO TO COME BACK ONCE I STOPPED DRINKING. THAT MADE NO SENSE TO ME. I AM JUST DESPERATE FOR HELP.

    TOPAMAX

    Hi Alicia
I had the same experience. My doc never heard of using Topa for alcoholism, so also would not prescribe it. She did have some experience with Campral though, and was willing to prescribe that. I think that I am going to order the Topa online. Best wishes.

      Hi Alicia

Don't despair, this has come up a lot on these boards.

It's not surprising your doc has not heard of this, because it is being used off-label, that is for a condition it is not approved for. You would need to bring copies of the studies mentioned in the book, like the Lancet study, and show the doctor.

Doctor may still be unwilling to prescribe. You could request naltrexone or campral, which are approved and known by doctors. But doctor may not even know about using medication for alcoholism or believe that abstinence is best. So what then? Find a new doctor or seek advice from an addiction specialist.

Another option to get topa is to lie and say you have migraines and get it for headaches, if you don't want alcoholism on your record. Or you can order from River Pharmacy online.

      Good luck.
