Me,too, Lush. All of our retirement, savings, etc., are tied into public utilities, and they're OK for now. But after 9/11 I had friends who lost over a million $ in one day. And these aren't young people - it was their retirement. Now is the time, tho, to buy property if you can. You certainly can't sell any of it right now. Best friend is Real Estate Agent, and she's hungrey!

Thousands more people out of work, with no jobs they're trained for available.

                  US Stock Exchange!!!

I grew up in a very modest household. Dad was blue collar, mom didn't work. They bought a little stock, inherited a little stock. By the time the estate came to us kids, total value was $1,000,000. The lesson is: just hang in there. It is not the time to change anything. My parents never considered selling any of it, just used the dividends.
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

                    Bloodletting!

Best, yes, you are right, it will be ?Freedom 95? for us older wage earners.

I am wading into this discussion because I am loosing money by association. Fortunately our Government wisely limited my foreign investments to 30 % of my portfolio in my RRSP (or 401K?).

The present state of the US economy is the direct result of the Republican doctrine of non- interference in the market place by the Legislature. The last eight years brought an orgy of de-regulation, initiating an apocalyptic free-for-all in the Market Place; consequently sanctioning bottomless greed and limitless access to the bottom line for a few, while leaving the current and future workforce with a TRILLION dollars of tax debt to pay off the bail outs where applicable.

How in the name of God did they (present administration) convinced themselves that the market (financial, insurances, mortgage lenders etc.) would simply and miraculously become ethical overnight and self regulate their actions? That enabled Enron to do what they were able to do for so long. It also opened the doors to the present mortgage and housing crisis and the demise of the Fanny Mae?s, Bear-Stearns, Merrill-Lynch, Lehman?s and that is just the top of the iceberg. The fallout has not even started. If there is no Regulatory impartial body in place to oversee the dealings of certain crucial legs of commerce, they will push the envelope until Armageddon.
It?s almost as if asking a felon to be his own jury.

It will be a slow and uphill battle before the international community begins to have a semblance of confidence in the US economy again and the decisions that come out of Washington. The Global Economy has shrunk our planet and every action has far reaching and immediate consequences.

I am at a total loss. Would somebody please explain to me how much more pain and sacrifices the American Electorate is willing to suffer presently and for future generations, before they opt for radical change?

The stock market should be revised ! These companies think that the US economy is their own little casino ! The govt. has to take greater control. We have all these CEO's making millions for screwing up ! I'ld like a job like that.....getting paid for screwing up ! I thought you just get fired for that !!!IAD

Evie is right - the financial markets are simply correcting themselves. As long as you are diversified in your investments you will be fine. Not trying to be flippant, but why get upset and worry about something we have no control over? If you want to make yourself heard, make sure you vote in the upcoming elections as the candidates have fairly divergent views on how to fix it.

Funny thing is, we never saw people questioning all the money they were making a couple of years ago off of real estate....
