spotty dingo has left the building ...

    dear all,

after many weeks of struggle i've decided that this forum is doing more bad than good for me. i accept full responsibility for PUI and putting myself too out there on the "Wow, McCain chose a Woman" topic, but while i participated in this thread and voiced my (obviously minority) opinion i have since come to the conclusion that MWO is NOT the place for political discussions.

we are united by our struggle with AL and i appreciate all your help and support on other posts, but i was so dismayed that so many of you support a future of America that is SO different than my own that i don't feel like putting my opinion out here anymore.

maybe i'm not looking in the right places on MWO but i'm not doing well right now and i feel like i'm not connecting with like people and i just feel like i need to take a break.

for those who were so nice about my dog (the Spotty Dingo) he is MUCH better -- went to see our old vet and he didn't think he had slipped a disk. Dingo just wants to PLAY now but we're still taking it easy.

Cheers to all you nice people and try to stay AF.

Yes, Spotty, I too don't understand what you really wanted from the site, but discussing politics and religion is always going to raise some hackles, even if it's in a barber shop! I left that thread when I saw the direction it was taking, because I am one person, with one opinion and one vote. I'm glad to share my opinion, but won't debate it. Life's too short, and my issue now is AL. I'm so glad your pup is better, my dogs help keep me sane. Peace to you on your journey. I hope our paths cross again in happier times.

I echo Gia's sentiments too Spotty. My judgment was clouded a few weeks back and I lost sight of the purpose of what MWO is here to achieve too. Admittedly I was drinking at that time and as I say I totally lost sight of my own goals. I know in the past I would of handled things very differently and just steered clear of the threads but I chose not to and got overly insenced at comments.

I feel the opposite to be honest where I feel I need to get back on the forum and gain some support back from loyal friends!!. No use cutting off my nose to spite my face is there!!

Anyway Spotty good luck with your goals and future intentions.

Dear Spotty,I have never even looked at this thread.I am not into politics and i come to this forum to be with others who like me, are alcoholics trying to recover from a deadly disease. We all do it in different ways.Thru laughter and tears.I have been hurt at times by people here and felt like leaving.Common sense tells me that People are just People and we come from many different back grounds but we do have one common goal...BEAT AL.I personally hope you will come join the AF Army thread.Let us get to know you and help us beat ALs butt...

Spotty, I'm sorry you have decided to leave. There are so many threads out there. Why pick a political one to cause you to leave? Our country is in such a mess right now, it's hard for us as Americans to get away from it. Yes, we are alcoholics, but we are citizens, too. I wish you the best and hope you will reconsider. Take care of your Dingo, and I'm going to try to get through the puppy stage with my two "pit bull terrorists," a much maligned breed of dog and probably the most mistreated. :l Kay

I am sorry you feel the way that you do Spotty
I never even looked at that thread. I know that religion and politics lead to much debate in my own family, and I am not here to engage in controversy. I am here to try and stay away from AL ODAT. Why not try another thread. We are here for you, if you choose to stay. I really hope that you do. I am so happy that your dog is doing better.
God Bless you K for taking care of those puppies. Did you adopt them? I agree, the poor innocent creatures are so mistreated.
Anyway, got off track. I just Love Animals.

SD, as I have learned you have to take what works for you and leave the rest. Politics are by their very nature always highly-charged, and just because you may be in the minority on a topic doesn't mean anything.

The great thing about this site is that nothing is off-limits, but that also means that we have some personal responsibility to simply not read if we come across something we don't like. I am sorry to hear that you are leaving, but remember that you will always be welcomed back should you decide to visit here again..

Hey Spotty, one more voice to say what all the folks above have said. I live a life in which most of my friends totally agree with my political stance, and mostly agree with my viewpoint on religion and spirituality. That is most emphatically NOT true here on MWO! But I have found that some of those who are a long way from me with respect to those areas of thinking/belief are in fact quite close to me in the way they approach freedom from alcohol and alcohol abuse. I have learned (sometimes painfully) to identify and stick close to those who display a healthy attitude and strong commitment about freedom from alcohol and alcohol abuse, and I believe that doing so is literally saving my life.

I just tend to avoid discussions about religion and politics here. When I see them going on, I try to take it all with lots of grains of salt! I hear people saying all kinds of things that I very vigorously disagree with! And I just can't afford to let it sidetrack me.

I hope that you find a way to find such people in your life, too. It's not something that is easy to find, by the way... and there's no reason, so far as I can see, that it cannot be here!

                  best wishes,

                  wip

Spotty, that thread has also made me both pleased and angry.

So much so, I simply left the thread and let it go. It's not important to me here.

I'm glad to hear your dog is better.

I'm also one of those who did not read that thread (on purpose), but now I had to go do a quick perusal, and unfortunately, I can understand your feelings, Spotty.

I think it's fine if people want to discuss politics here, but whenever they do, I get depressed-- so I mostly avoid it.

I have become less involved and less active here than I used to be, and would be, if I didn't feel the majority on here are of a drastically different viewpoint from me on the major issues facing the world and the people in it.

However, there is so much good here, too, and I have been the recipient of so much support, so much compassion and understanding, that I keep coming back and I will continue to do so for a long time, I think.

I'm in a pretty good place now, at least compared to some other times, and I feel it's my turn to also give back some of what I received. I love the people here, even when our values clash. Some of the people I have received the most support from have expressed views repugnant to me, and I still love them and respect them and always will.

I understand your feelings Spotty, but I doubt you will ever find a more supportive group when it comes to our main reason for being here: battling AL. In this, we are all the same.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

I think that recently, we have had a few more political threads than usual, because of the 9/11 anniversary and the election campaign. I was a little surprised to see some of the conservative viewpoints in some whose advice I have always looked forward to reading and the US-centric nature of some of the comments, seemingly unattached to a world perspective. I learned for the first time what people's views were. Maybe there were similar threads before but if there were I didn't see them.

But I don't think it matters one bit that people have different world views. You can still get great advice on alcohol and that is the reason everyone is here. My advice to people has always been not to make dramatic departures with going away threads. You may need this forum in the future and change your mind. You can drop in less if you like.

There is definitely a lot to gain.
