Marbella, you are exactly right:it is something to do with 'Leaving a Sinking Ship Syndrome' - people around you are getting off, and you know deep down it is really stupid to stay on, but because you can't at that time make the leap off, at least having others on with you makes you feel better.

WIP and Marbs. Its so strange that feeling. When i park my car in newport where the drinkers are all together drinking there cider there is a part of me that wants to sit with them, get pissed, not have a care in the world. I know that that would not be the case, but i think its part of the reason im compelled to watch them
Sea..im making this up by the way, i am an angel. To Infinity And Beyond!!

Trying to find a pic of the "pumpkin" My soon to be 22 year old son, but he is always making goofy faces. He has been doing that since he was a baby."Decide-Which Voice in Your Head you Can Keep Alive" (Shinedown)

Those of us who "can't handle it" may very well be seen by others as "nutters," and so we are often afraid to tell anyone the truth about why we are not drinking. It's a damn shame, really, because once we "come out" and let people know the truth, things get a lot easier.
But I totally recommend the "antibiotic" line, or "losing weight," or whatever works, especially early on, when everything seems so shaky and scary. And I think the MOST important thing about these events is to make a firm decision, early on, not to engage in any sorts of arguments or debates, either internal or with others, about why you aren't drinking.
I'm ashamed to say that I remember a time when I pressured someone to drink, a former drinking buddy who had stopped drinking... I think there was a sort of envy that I couldn't acknowledge, that my friend was doing something admirable, something I knew I was not yet able to do.
Anyhow, you just don't want to let yourself get engaged in any of those debates. They will drag you down into a place where you really don't want to go.

I am SO SO glad to be out of that horrible place.

Most of the people here I have known since I was 16, and they are like family, it is very hard to break from them completely. However there won't be many left soon- they are dropping like flies.
