I was a bit worried when reading the posts yesterday when members were advising you to get a rescue saying the shelter people will know the temperaments of the dogs- most of the RSPCA staff don't have a clue, although I respect in other shelters that is probably not the case.
Little kids will poke and play, it is normal! But a dog that has been cruelly treated and shut up in an RSPCA kennel will have issues. It often ends with the well meaning family returning the dog, and the dog being put down because it is 'unhomeable' when in fact they just give out dogs to poorly matched homes without even owning an animal themselves.
My mum worked as an RSPCA home inspector for a few years, then for 12 years by herself and has rehomed about 500 dogs- but she will not give a rescue dog to a home with under 12s.
I was reading the thread yesterday on the way back from France on my phone, but could not post- by the time i got home you had already made the puppy decision, so I did not have to butt in- but I was very happy that I felt you made the right choice.
