Halloween
Halloween was indeed a pagan holiday, from the Celts. Pre-Christian Romans had some influences too. (harvest goddesses, etc.) When the Roman Empire converted to Christianity, they tried to creat Christian identities for many of the old pagan symbols and ceremonies, because the people were not going to give them up. Halloween didn't take hold in the US until Irish immigrants started coming in the 1840s, and brought those Celtic traditions with them. That's how pumpkins came to be part of the holiday -- there were no pumpkins in the Old World, since they are native to the Americas -- the Irish would carve rutabagas or turnips into Jack O'Lanterns. But once they came to the US -- hey, a pumpkin is easier to carve than a turnip!
I love Halloween. Time to get my own decorations out!
