I think this thread was perhaps begun to poke at gun owners and/or hunters?

hunters in the US provide approx 370 million dollars per year that goes straight to coordinated preservation and conservation efforts. Hunters actually do more for our environment than any other group including special interest 'green' groups who don't even come close.

even non hunting shooters such as myself support conservation efforts thanks to the Pittman-Robertson act of 1937 which sees that 11 percent of new gun purchases goes to the "federal aid in wildlife restoration act".

when you see an animal come off the endangered species act you can thank hunters and gun owners.
when you enjoy beautiful parks, streams and scenes of wildlife in the US you can thank hunters and gun owners.

and you can thank Sarah Palin for supporting the great American disciplines of hunting and shooting.

actually wht ak says is rt,if the wolves werent shot you get desease,rt now in ontario ,canada ,we have an over abundence of deer,several kinds,to many,but there is no hunt in the city, but there are at special time s of the year ,the fall,and yes i said city,like bear they multiply,and they multiply like rabbits, and rats,hello you get desease and the human pop,gets sick and shit happens,so hello there is not nothing yes nothing wrong with gyco,somtimes i wonderif anyone reads history,europe plague, black plague,kiled many it happen to be people gyco

I'm sure it comes across as grossly unfair to shoot them from the air, I mean how unsportsmanlike can you get. But it's not a bunch of reckless hunters let loose in the air just to have the fun of the kill like it might be portrayed. It's just that wolves are not hunted like moose and other animals for their meat. Overpopulation means starvation and disease. They would die a much worse death.

I was going to post about this but can't. It would take pages. Okay, I'm going to say just a bit.

One of my best friends has been president of the Wildlife Federation. So, I know of what I speak.

Do I yearn to sit in a helicopter and shoot at a defenseless animal? No. Never.

Have I seen what over-population of a species does to that population? Yes.

I am glad we have those who hunt and keep populations in check.

And, like Det says, and I know you "liberals" are going to hate this,

This is so true. I "grew up" in Florida, meaning I spent at least 3 years someplace, and I know very well. I remember when alligators and crocodiles (south FL) were endangered, today they are not. Today we are hip deep in these guys.

I lived in Colorado and I know about the deer, elk and moose but people there are HORRIFIED when a mountain lion attacks a jogger. However, the laws protect the mountain lions. Oh and the laws protect the grizzlies. (You don't want to see what one of those guys can do to you, a car, a tent, a house...)

People who REALLY know about animals, about preserving them know several things.

You love them and you respect them. It sucks to run into a Grizzlie, a Mountain Lion or a Wolf when you are hiking. They want to eat you. You are meat.

However, you better respect them for what they are and you better realize they don't care what we are.

Our "job" is to do the best we can to make sure that those species that should survive do.

There are those that argue that our species should be extinct. I do not believe that, I love my children and grandchildren.

I was posting more and realized it would just send off a huge debate. This is not the forum for that.

I do love all of you, though. My conservative, liberal, independent and anarchist friends.

It's the same with people who get so upset with deer hunters. I'm the first to report reckless ones or poachers, but if we didn't have controlled hunting, more people AND deer would die. Did you know that deer kill more people in the US each year than any other creature? As a Harley rider, you don't want to know what it feels like to see that white tail flash in front of you. I knew a guy who survived having one come thru his sports car windshield and out the back glass. Anyway, I understand the reason for hunting that is controlled. Starving wild animals are sad and dangerous.

I'm just glad the grizzlies and polar bears aren't in charge of deciding when there is an overpopulation of humans, and recognizing that, since so many of us are starving, it's merciful to thin us out...

Lots of deer and bears here. I can honestly say I see a dead deer on or on the side of the road at least once a week. So many accidents happen because they have been run out of their environment due to modern development. Sad.

As much as I love animals so very much, Det. is so on the money. I, personally could not take the life of an animal but I appreciate what the hunters do for us and for them, really.

UGH. Ingorance is bliss, isn't it? For me in this case, I think so.

Incidentally what hunters and shooters do for wildlife development goes way beyond thinning of herds.

Hunter/shooter funded and run programs have established wetland breeding sanctuaries for waterfowl that are having a hard time, and many many other programs that I'm too sleepy to recount.

Lately this site has turned into one big political time bomb..........I don't know if iit's because elections are so near or not. " Really" what is this site all about ? Trying to change everyone elses beliefs or trying to stay sober !?! I'm sick of politics, I've tried to make light of all this bickering, but it seems never to go away.
