Dr. turned me down
My doctor refused to prescribe Topamax. I went in knowing what I was going to say and how I would propose this is the solution for me. He interrupted my speech with questions, and immediately said "that is not practicing medicine" to prescribe a "magic pill" that does not exist to treat alcoholism. He suggested inpatient or outpatient treatment and AA is a must. I explained that I have given this a lot of thought and that type of treatment is not for me. He said I am in denial and everyone with my problem feels that way. I suppose I jumped the gun in not preparing for my appointment. I was so excited I could not wait one more day, and now realize I should have had some literature or something to help me prove my point.

Dear whos,
I'm sorry your doctor is so close minded. I don't know your situation, or the degree of your drinking problem, but I don know the MWO program can and does work for many. It is possible without the drugs also. I've managed quite well with the supplements and the rest of the program. You can go ahead and start without the Topamax and if you decide you really want to try it there are other options.
Don't let your doctor bring you down! You can do this!!:h_______________

:welcome:Hi Whos and welcome. I've heard that story before. I haven't tried Topa, but I know the medical community (in the U.S. at least) believes that there is nothing, nothing but AA and rehab. Please don't feel hopeless ! You can order Topa through other channels ... I am hoping others will come along to comment who use Topa. Hang in there my friend :l:boxer: Get the hell out of my house, Al, you worthless bastard!!

Dear Who
Sorry you didn't get the support you were hoping for from your doc. Sounds as if he/she was on their own agenda? AA helps many people but not all. You are bound to feel disappointed but that will pass.
You are taking action & I commend you on that. Really well done!!! Rise to the challenge if you can. Look at your options. Take the time you need to reflect & decide how best to proceed (you should get some very helpful advice here). Your belief in your recovery will be a major factor in it becoming reality. I look forward to hearing about your next step.
Stay close

I'm so sorry Who's. It must have been so hard for you to ask and to talk to your doctor about this, and then have him shoot you down like that. He is close minded and behind the times. I'm so sorry you had to go through this, but please don't give up.
I tried AA, and it really didn't work for me at all. I know it does for some, but I also know it will never work for everyone. I have been with MWO for a long time and have been taking topa for over a year. It works very well for me, but I know it doesn't work for everyone also. That's the point. Some things work for some people and not others. We must have the freedom to choose and to try whatever is available to us. It is just too bad that your doctor has swallowed the AA brainwash pill. But many have.
I finally found a doctor that prescribes topa for me, but it took a while. Before that, I ordered it online from River Pharmacy. I never had a problem with River. You might just want to buy it from River. Be careful dosing up. I'll be more than happy to talk you about that and there is a lot of good information on this website. I think it's worth a try. I love my topa. I was sober before I started taking it, but it has made the sober life easier and more enjoyable.
Stick with MWO. We can help in many ways - with or without the topa.
Good luckRest in Peace, Bear. We miss you.

Dear Who,
What a bummer!! I totally understand what a letdown that was. Many docs DON'T listen fully to their patients (I'm living proof) and it may be necessary to try til you find one you connect with. Mine, blessedly, was great! It helped (?) that Topamax also is prescribed to hypertension, which I have. One question - do you smoke? I'm also taking Chantix to quit, and it has CANCELLED any cravings I had for anything, but I do have a tummy ache from it. I'll tolerate that for a few months, tho, because I want to quit smoking, I do not want AL, and I have no appetite, so hope I'll lose a few pounds. Hang in there, and don't expect Topa to be all and do all. It works differently for different people, and it still takes a plan and work, but it's SO worth it. Pick yourself up from your disappointment and try something else. Keep posting for advice here. You'll get lots of different experiences. So glad you're here!! Welcome!!sigpic

Here's the link to the research of Bankole Johnson, one of the primary researchers of topamax and alcohol. If you look around on this site, you will see he has a letter and information to physicians on the effectiveness of topa and how to dose it.

Obviously you and this Dr. are wired differently and I hope you can find someone else to work with you because I know how frustrating working with Dr's can be. Topamax is used as a migraine preventer, you might want to try that approach. WELCOME!!!!!!!!Patience has its limits. Take it too far, and it's cowardice.

Wow, thank you everyone for your support and encouragement. I think I will order it online because I am so ready to kick this problem in the butt. I know it alone cannot solve my problem. I was looking forward to following this program completely. I have to do something and AA and all that is not for me. I have a long family history of alcoholism, in fact my grandfather shot himself in the head 4 days ago. I have been ready to quit drinking, in fact have tried many times before, but I just cave into the cravings. I have a 5 year old son and I am determined to stop this deadly trend in my family.
Again thank you all so much. I was shocked to see so many replies.

whos,
I'm so sorry to hear about your grandfather. My doctor was also only AA-minded so I said the hell with it and ordered it online. It was easier and less stressful that way. When I have the time, I'll search for a new dr and get a proper perscription. Take care of yourself and certainly begin the plan without the topa.
Take care, :l
