    PORK CHOPS!

Got sent this in an e-mail today and just had to share it.

In a zoo in California , a mother tiger gave birth to a rare set of
triplet tiger cubs. Unfortunately, due to complications in the
pregnancy, the cubs were born prematurely and due to their tiny size,
    they died shortly after birth.

The mother tiger after recovering from the delivery, suddenly started to
decline in health, although physically she was fine. The veterinarians
felt that the loss of her litter had caused the tigress to fall into a
depression. The doctors decided that if the tigress could surrogate
another mother's cubs, perhaps she would improve.

After checking with many other zoos across the country, the depressing
news was that there were no tiger cubs of the right age to introduce to
the mourning mother. The veterinarians decided to try something that had
never been tried in a zoo environment. Sometimes a mother of one species
will take on the care of a different species. The only 'orphans' that
could be found quickly, were a litter of weanling pigs. The zoo keepers
and vets wrapped the piglets in tiger skin and placed the babies around
the mother tiger. Would they become cubs or pork chops??
    Take a look...

Now, please tell me one more time ........?
Why can't the rest of the world get along??

Made me laugh and cry simultaneously.

We have a lot to learn from the other animals on this planet.

sweet - but what would have happened in the wild ? humans so quickly give human emotions to animals which they dont have. habituating wildlife has really bad implications on preservation and conservation. i dont get a lot of it. people take in wild animals as 'pets' often imprinting them - believing they are rehabilitating them and then release them - they dont survive. cute does not exist in the wild, nor do zoos, or pigs dressed in tiger stripper pj's
                  a tiger with depression ?
humans are fucked up. wildlife live hard - honestly and intinctively - they function. we can learn from them indeed.

SP, the belief that animals do not experience emotions is no longer held by most scientists who study this stuff. It is a hold-over from the mechanistic views of Descartes, along with the strong perceived need among some religious folks to create a sharp line of demarcation between humans ("made in the image of God") and animals, considered "dumb brutes" not worthy of compassion and understanding...

That said, I agree with your concern that we not go overboard in Disney-fication of the world of non-human animals. We need to learn how to effectively help the other species on this planet, in part because we are all part of an interdependent web of being... when we destroy a species, we are diminishing ourselves in a very big way....

i ABSOLUTELY believe animals have a vaste range of mannorism and behoviour patterns that can easily be interperated as emotions - but humans are far to quick to overlay one of our emotional responses onto animals. i have worked extensively with animals and have lived in very close proximity studing them in bush environments - i am in complete awe of them and how they live, socialise and respond in different situations...
was just my opinion seeing pigs dressed up as tigers - nothing more

So we all agree. That's great. We're just expressing the same basic views in different ways here. This is one of those "conversations" that could blow up into in argument because we are not interacting in person, but through writing (and delayed interaction at that). It seems to me we are all on the same wavelength here, which makes me happy. Let's keep it that way, ok?
