I hope that you will have time during this busy period to reflect on what we are celebrating. A baby born to a poor couple in difficult circumstances is commonplace around the world and throughout history. The other elements which surround the Christmas story-the visits of the shepherds and the Magi led by a star and God's messages through dreams and angels-which may seem fanciful to many these days, are actually signals that say this birth two thousand years ago is of significance to every generation and people in every circumstance.
Jesus represented God's presence and interest in all of human affairs, the commonplace as well as the momentous. That would be wonderful in itsels, but Jesus went on to give his life for us. He experienced our death so that we could recieve his life, life that never ends. Jesus said that he had come to give us life, life in all its fullness. When Jesus was born he was coming into the world for you.
Wherever you celebrate Christmas this year, may you have the opportunity to pause and let the wonder of the story touch you, to recieve and give thanks.
