    Damn im hungry

I probably shouldn't say it, but thanks to AL i've lost 20kg. I look and feel great. Today is my 16th AF day and honestly i could eat and eat and eat. I never, ever ate chocolate, but now i have enormous cravings for it. Is this normal? I excercise daily, but i am gaining weight fast! Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks.

Funny, you should mention it. I had a couple of cravings over the last couple of days. Once I had a chocolate bar yesterday it went away and has stayed away.

I NEVER eat chocolate but I had a HUGE craving for a bar. LOL. I was laughing at myself eating it in my car. That is so NOT me. But hey, it worked.

I am eating a bit more than when I was drinking. Mostly healthy food with the occasional 'treat'.

Eat what your body craves; although watch the sugar and the refined sugar. In the early part of sobriety, many just want to desperately get off of the AL and their sugar cravings go up. I think just getting through the first few weeks, eating some junk foods won't be a bad thing.

    Yes, it is normal.

I think loads of people crave sugar when they give up alcohol, I know I do...
Try Lglutamine..it will help stabilise your blood sugar levels. Plus eating complex carbs like wholemeal bread, brown rice, fruit, and vegies, plus protein. Eventually your body will settle.
In the meantime enjoy that chocolate! Better than drinking!

              Hey
              YES it's COMPLETELY normal.
I read somewhere that people that used to have a drinkng problem will have a sweet tooth instead. It had something to do with you body needing a certain ingredient that sweets/chocolate/crisps ect ect have.
              EAT AWAY!

Sugar and AL are chemically almost identical. That is why drinkers rarely are sweets eaters (we get all our sugar from AL, plus ice cream and beer don't taste very good together, lol) and when we quit drinking, we want more sugar. I know the MWO book says that if you eat sugar in the early days of AF, it can trigger cravings for more AL. However I found that just a bite or 2 of chocolate did the trick. Others have found that peanut butter helps -- probably a better choice cause of the protein. But as Starting, AFM and others said, some chocolate and snacks are better than drinking. I find that around witching hour (5:00) I'd be hungry, and that would trigger wanting a drink, so having a snack before dinner can help. So yes, sugar cravings are normal -- just try not to eat the whole bag of Hershey's kisses!

Provided you don't overdo it, I would say a healthy appetite is a good thing. Just think about all the dietary neglect we put our bodies through when we were drinking!

To combat sugar cravings, I find a whole-grain based fortified cereal with lots of fibre and thiamine/niacin helps me. In fact, high-fibre foods in general are good for stabilising blood sugar.

I don't have a sweet tooth in my head!!! And even still, have indeed had a few sugar cravings this past week....
Usually a suger free Jell-O pudding takes it away. Oh, and a SMALL bowl of Cocoa Krispies with skim milk also works!
Anything is better than the AL!

I'd say yeah, there can big a big sugar/carb craving. I never had any desire for any sweets. I used to say another glass of wine was my desert.

Now, I can get big cravings for sweets. Even the odd can of coke. Oh well, it's still better for you than AL.

I went out and bought myself some some high protein/ low carb sports recovery drink. It has a high concentration of L-Glutamine. I am hoping to drink it when my cravings start at about 3-4 pm.

Ben & Jerry's chocolate caramel ice cream seems to do the trick for me.
I just tone down my eating for the entire day so I can allow for an extra 350 calories of indulgence.
My thought is 'whatever, it's better than a bottle of wine."

I'm so pleased I found this thread! I have never eaten chocolate in any quantity before, can have it in the house and not touch it. But I'm just about to eat my 2nd bar of the day (bear in mind its 6pm here). I'm going with it for now as I'm really craving a big fat glass of red wine, and maybe when I've eaten all the English chocolate we brought back from the UK I won't be so keen. B
