When does the Weight start coming off??

      Lynnie,
So now I'm jealous of you too. Oh well, at least the stuff I eat is very healthy: oatmeal with blueberries and ground flax seed for breakfast, veggie/bean soup for lunch. I eat these things just about every day. My snack is dried cranberries with toasted soy "nuts".
My life is better without alcohol, since 9/1/12. My sobriety tool is the list at permalink 236 on the toolbox thread under monthly abstinance.

When does the Weight start coming off??

I need to lose 10-15 lbs, I have been AF 37 days but I think my problem is I procrastinate when it comes to excersice. I eat pretty healthy, so I know it is because I need to unperch my big but.

I'm also hoping that when I reach 90 days AF, which will be a first in 10 or so years, that I will see some changes.

Anyway Lynnie please let us know how it goes for you.

When does the Weight start coming off??

Yet another way that this journey is different for all of us. I too expected the weight to fall off when I stopped drinking (it sure congributed to the gain!) but it did not.

BUT...for me at age 49 (the first time I went AF for 60 days) my hormones were out of whack making weight loss nearly impossible. (gaining was always possible though)

Women in the menopause or peri-menopause stage of life might want to read one of Suzanne Somers books on aging such as The Sexy Years. That is what prompted me to find a knowledgeable doctor to get me on bio-identical hormones.

              Before on May 31, 2008:

              Now - January 3 2009:

The weight loss was NOT possible without fixing several hormone issues and bringing all that into balance.

              FWIW..

                WOW ! you look great.
Without getting to personal when did you start peri-menopause? I'm 39 and I'm just wondering. I suppose every one is different but it doesn't hurt to ask.

When does the Weight start coming off??

Couldn't say exactly, but my weight troubles kicked into high gear when I turned 40 and just got progressively worse until at 50 when I couldn't lose very much at all no matter what I did.

I have my life back! This is the icing on the cake of kicking AL to the curb.

                    Hi Lynnie
I've got 8 days sober and have lost 9 pounds. I'm sure you will get fast results too. I keep myself feeling "full" most of the time. I drink alot of water and I think that is really helping contribute to the weight loss too. Have you been having any results yet? I know you will!

When does the Weight start coming off??

                      Lynnie
I've lost 17lbs since end of August (I needed to - I gained about 28 due to drinking) I too didn't notice any weight loss for the first couple of weeks, and then it dropped off at about a lb a week - nice and healthy amount to lose and it has STAYED off.

                      You've had some really good comments on your thread - just one or two other points I've thought of which you may want to think about;

If you are exercising more - and many people do, after having more energy / motivation, from quitting AL (remember muscle weighs more than fat, so initally you may not appear to lose weight but don't get despondent.

Be careful if you substitutue other stuff for alcohol eg soft drinks, or eat more chocolate etc which many people do in the early weeks after going sober (and it's not a bad thing in the short term if it gets you through the early difficult weeks, as long as it is only short term) as this can be just as high in calories.

try to look at body measurements rather than weight in lbs ie if you tone up and lose inches round your waist then this is good in itself even if the weight loss initally is small - have you recorded your body measurements with a tapemeasure? I'm yet to find anyone who has quit drinking recently who has not lost bloatedness round the waist - look at DG's photos for inspiration. Britney Spears has also recently quit AL for about 4 months and she has a great toned waist now and no longer looks about 4 months pregnant.

What others mentioned about the menopause is certainly true. I don't know how this fits in in relation to you as i've no idea of your age but it is certainly true that it's harder to lose weight after the menopause (metabolism slows down for one thing) - Doggy girl knows more about the hormones and things !!!! which is why I've been so keen to lose weight recently and get try and get back to the weight I had in my mid 20's- still have another 8 or so lbs to go, as I'm 37 and have had a hysterectomy and the menopause cant' be far away for me!

Good luck on your journey - sounds like you're doing just great!

                      take care

Doggygirl - you look absolutely amazing. I'm sure it was hard work, but it looks worth it. My scales are staying the same, which is good because I am eating so much. I feel like my belly is getting bigger, not smaller, possibly less bloated. I think though that what I see in the mirror doesn't exactly reflect the changes in my body. I must find my measuring tape, my husband keeps taking it and losing it.

Found my tape - I have lost 3cm off my waist. Not much in 3 weeks but a loss at least.

When does the Weight start coming off??

ezzame, thank you for your nice words. I feel so lucky to have found a good doctor who is also close to where I live - lots of folks drive multiple states away to find someone good - believe it or not! Of course that isn't magic either - just paves the way for my body to cooperate if I do the work of exercise and eating right.

kitkat I no longer monitor my calorie/carb/protein intake but I did until I got close to my goal weight range. The key for me is keeping thing in balance (calories not too LOW in addition to not too high) and also make sure I'm getting enough protein (for me I seem to do best with 90 - 120 grams / day). With the level of exercise I'm doing, I seem to be fine at a carb level of around 50 - 75 grams a day and most of that comes from veggies and some fruit. I'm probably more like 100 grams on some days now but I'm not counting so don't know for sure. What I'm trying to do for mainenance is learn how to make the right choices each day that keep me in my goal range without too much stress.

Test Jeans were my friend and also the monthly measuring at Curves. The scale doesn't tell the whole story so ITA with those who have mentioned the measuring tape. That is especially important if you are exercising now and weren't before. Also, without a change in exercise a low carb eating program with adequate protein & fat tends to build muscle and reduce fat too - especially if a person has been eating a "low fat" type diet historically.

                              Just some thoughts. Happy Sunday!
