I think it is the date that Australia was first landed by Brits. As an irish girl in Australia I may be a little bit ignorant about it.

I am celebrating by going to the best fireworks display in the country tonight. They don't celebrate New Years much in Perth, they build it all up for Australia Day.

OK - here is the official version of Australia Day -

Australia Day, also known as Anniversary Day and Foundation Day, is the official national day of Australia. Celebrated annually on 26 January, the day commemorates the arrival of the First Fleet in 1788, marking the start of British colonisation of Australia. Australia Day is an official public holiday in every state and territory of Australia, and is marked by the Order of Australia and Australian of the Year awards, along with an address from the Prime Minister.

According to the State Government of Victoria "Australia Day celebrates the anniversary of Captain Arthur Phillip unfurling the British flag at Sydney Cove and proclaiming British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of Australia on 26 January 1788.

Records of the celebration of Australia Day date back to 1808, with Governor Lachlan Macquarie having held the first official celebration of Australia Day in 1818. In 2004, an estimated 7.5 million people attended Australia Day celebrations and functions across the country.

Australia Day is seen as controversial by some historians. Alongside proposals to change the date of Australia Day, there have been significant protests from the Indigenous Australian community. Many Indigenous Australians see Australia Day as a celebration of the destruction of Indigenous culture by British colonialism. Since 1988, "Invasion Day" protests have been held supporting this view.


So in a nutshell - Aussies just go out and celebrate being Australian and do typically Australian things:-

Socialise with mates/family
Hit the beach
BBQ
Drink
Watch cricket
Attend various local community events where they have Citizenship celebrations and fun activities like dunny racing (mobile toilets), thong throwing (flip flops), tug-o-wars, games of cricket.....etc

A really good excuse to get out and have some fun.

Although in heart i'm still european, i call Australia home(for 10 years now).
It's difficult subject for me, i will never be 100% aussie(accent etc) and im not 100% european anymore. Im in between. Difficult to find your own identity.

Well, Lushy - until I joined this forum, I'd never heard of Cinco de Mayo, so, we live and learn.

OK. Dunny Races. A dunny (outhouse) on wheels is pulled by 2 people and pushed by another 2. The 'jokey' is the guy sitting on the throne shouting instructions and encouraging the pullers. They run, dragging the dunny as fast as possible, over a distance of 250m. There could be 8 or 10 or more dunnies whizzing down the track. It's purely a good-fun thing.

It's a day of celebration AND a public holiday. Weee-heeee!!!!
