    Finding that SOMETHING ...

Ahhhhhh, this is right up my alley

First off, Skinned... how do you define happiness?
It's awfully difficult to look for, find, or achieve something you haven't yet defined. Since happiness is not something tangible (bring me one pound of happiness) - it is relative. So happiness for me probably looks quite different from happiness for you.

Second... is happiness something that can be FOUND - as in OUTSIDE of ourselves? Or, is it something that develops INSIDE? I tend to think it's the latter.. but that's just me.
Okay, WHO put a stop payment on my reality check?

      Finding that SOMETHING ...

Skinned, when I first start, I had that 'stinking drinking thinking' going on. I was constantly thinking about what else to do with myself, how to get that 'happy' feeling, etc. That was a crock! I've finally realized for myself I was spending so my time first juggling my life (what was left of it) around drinking, then juggling around what to do instead of drinking, I'd forgotten to just live, forgotten how. Now, my days, thank God, my family and this place, it's not a part of my day or my thoughts (most) of the time, and the relief is one of the biggest gifts, just realizing how much importance it has lost. You've gotten some great ideas here - I hope they help you!

        Finding that SOMETHING ...

Today I bought three books, one on making vintage aprons (I don't own a sewing machine but my daughter in law does); one on tying chinese knots; and one on crocheting funky hats. I passed by the French lessons but they pulled, they pulled.
Cycle ... If you need any help with the crocheting, I'm a pretty good crocheter. Actually, I've sold alot of my finished items. I also sell crochet books on Ebay for extra money. As for French lessons, I took 3 years in high school and the only words I remember are: Voulez-vous que chez avec moi? LOL ... (Where's IAD with the disco video?) As for tying Chinese knots, good luck with that one. I tried tatting on a few occasions and ended up with the thread all wrapped around and knotted on my hands. :H

sunshine...I think I relate to you because of our equine backgound (loved your last photo) but I want 2 know where to get that inner happiness/peace back.....I used to have it but I feel very old and pragmatic now...people just are not what they present themselves to be, they seem to be two-faced, fake and not dependable, political, as it were.....I see people thru my husband's "cop" eyes....expect the worst.....I never used to be that way.

Thanks BU. I couldn't believe it was a foal. I hope you can be happy again. You're prob not as old as me, and I've been married to the worlds most negative man for over 38 years! He almost turned me to the 'dark side' once, but I fought my way back.

Yep, Bottoms... horses ARE something I enjoy My avatar are Mark, 8 yr old TB (I don't have him anymore) and Sophie, 33 year old Arabian/x and Shelby, 8 yr old Chow/Collie pound pup. I do adore them all. I adore farm life.

Although... not SO much in the winter, ya know, lugging buckets through blizzards and whatnot... :H

I really don't want to make this too long or sappy or about me, this is Skinned's thread... I did find that 'inexplicable grin' again. It has nothing to do with AL or AF. I has to do with letting myself feel something. Even running the risk of getting hurt. Even being a tiny bit reckless with my emotions

                              Skinned Knees,

I don't think there's ever one thing that makes anyone truly happy. You may be setting yourself up for failure, looking for something non-existent.

What you said reminded me of relationships (and we've all had some sort of crap relationship with alcohol, or we wouldn't be here, pondering this stuff).

When I was younger, my female friends and I sometimes wondered how we'd know when we met the man who was right for us, above all others - the one who would make us truly happy. Decades later, some of those women are still my friends. None of the men we met/married are around now and we laugh at the concept of a partner who would make us happy. Partners don't do it, work doesn't do it, booze certainly doesn't. It comes from within, not outside of us.

I sometimes feel like I'm in the doldrums a bit, without the highs and lows Al induced. But at least I'm content and peaceful, which I certainly wasn't before.
