    Antabuse info needed

Okay, I have my Antabuse prescription. I have looked up a lot of information about it.
I have read about the side effects. How bad are they--I know everyone is different.

Now I am debating--start it now? Or wait until after my vacation which begins Saturday.

I do not want to be ill from side effects during vacation. But I do not want to be drunk on vacation.

But I know part of me is rationalizing this --for me part of the vacation experience is the Margarita or cold bee on the beach. And I am convincing myself I can Moderate without starting the Antabuse.

Daughters say start it NOW. Husband says wait until after vacation. Right now I am thinking wait..I can moderate.
But the other half of me says that I haven't before so why would I on vacation???

    Any thoughts?

hmm, UNG, can you guess what our thoughts might be... ?

Seriously... it sounds as if you really have gotten pretty far in your internal debate about whether "moderation" is possible for you, and you really want to allow yourself to be talked into drinking on vacation... Only you can decide how important it is to remain AF.... and, I wonder... why do you suppose your kids don't want you to drink any more?

Maybe you should take it when you are 100% committed to it....when will that be? Only you have the true answer. You are a very strong human being just for acquiring the prescription and feeling this strongly about quitting. I wish you all the best with your decision :l

        I have to second that.

Definitely think you should start now, luv. You're absolutely right... you haven't been able to mod yet... why or how would you on vacation????

Big fat hug, you can do this... YOU want to be AF, remember?

              You are all correct

I knew it! I know in my :h what the right answer is..the logical answer. I am starting Antabuse tomorrow/Friday (is that enough time after the wine on Tuesday evening??)
WIP hit the nail on the head--mention my kids and I am in!
You, too, Sun--you are right, I can't moderate so why try.

Thanks everyone else, I needed verification.:thanks:

I was reminded that before I started drinking (

Good for you, UNG! Never let anyone... friends, spouse, and especially not your own mind! .... persuade you to abandon what you truly know is the right course of action!

Have a great vacation, and let us know how it goes!

                  Hi Upnorth,

Good on the Antabuse.!! I started before Christmas and my doc suggested to start after christmas to be more realistic. I took it two days later and had the greatest sober christmas time!!

When you are talking about side effects, are you talkinga about an Antabuse Alcohol reaction or normal side effects?

Have not had major side effects aside from my stomach feeling a bit rough for the first couple of days. Lowered the dose and coped great. Nothing to worry about.

Been on the Antabuse for 64 days and it's been teh best decision of my life.!!! Absolutely nothing to worry about. Just don't even think about drinking on it!!! That'll definately spoil your holiday and will not be much of a pleasure!!

                  Good luck

The journey is the goal. As long as you're fighting the good fight and you're not giving up on giving up, you're winning. It's not about how often you get knocked down, it's about how often you get up again. Sobriety the goal for sure. But striving to get to that goal is what it's about. Not getting there. Because the journey never ends. The journey is the goal.

                    Antabuse side effects

I am not worried about a reaction if I drink on antabuse because I will NOT--the thought of getting violently ill is a great deterrent.:eeew::yukko: I want to enjoy this vacation and stay sober, but wouldn't it be ironic if the Antabuse made me sick?

My concern is that I may experience side effects (they list so many!) and then be in a foreign country--, then what. The doctor gave what he said is a low dosage--250 mg-

Did you have any side effects? This is confusing

Hey upnorth. No, no side effects, like I said, the tummy was a bit upset in the first 3 days so starting with 500mg which is double your dose I decreased to 250mg and have maintained it since than. Had no further problems than. 250 mg is a good size dose. It might be wise to stay away from perfumes, and other alcohold containing things for the first couple of days if you can. Some people have said ot have had a reaction. Not me though.

Hi UpNorthGirl, I wish you a super holiday, relax, and with or without the antabuse, I hope you can just enjoy being away and doing things with your children and focussing on anything but drinking. Just get stuck into having a great time with the family, drink loads of water, relax, do sports etc etc and avoid drinking situations.

Also, if you did start the antabuse and you felt ill or had some side effects, you could just stop until you got home couldn't you? No harm giving it a go.

Whatever you decide, I just hope you have a lovely time, cherish every moment as holidays don't come along that often.

Hey UpN -- I posted on your other thread but just wanted to add one point on side effects. I never had any at all. Also, my doctor suggested I take only a half a pill each day and that worked too. Lots of luck, love and hats off to a wonderful vacation !!!!
