Tell me about it Angel, but from that day to this I have NEVER spoken to any professional about my addictions.

Pain Killer Addiction
oh Fickle,
In no way have you been annoying. I am so grateful to Starty for getting this out there and to your for being so upfront about your situation.
I was strong and healthy and knew I could handle anything my body threw me.... just will and hard work.. ..NOT.
I am so humble now. When I can not deal with the meds side effects ..I back off a while. Lay on the couch heat,w/ little dog. I go downhill until I can't stand it. you know how that feels, I can tell. When the pup starts whining and licking my face I know time to get up and try a bit harder.
I had a procedure where the doc injects a solution-- directly into nerves involved --to strip off their sheath, thus is stopping the nerves from random misfire.
I could see on the apparatus (like computer dentist uses) they were using to guide the needle right where they needed to be.
For a few sec was a breeze, then he hit that nerve -started assulting it with chemicals- and I came unglued. pain you can't imagine till you feel it. Supposed to help. Maybe 3 months!!!
took 2wks for the nerves to calm down(very high pain level) a week of telling my husband it worked, then last week of increasing pain.
Would you believe I did this 3 times? My guy kept saying, just face it.....I just wanted it to work so much.
last time my regular doc thought I had shingles. The area of pain was swollen, red, hot and exactly followed the nerve zone he worked. Called him, he said it was the procedure, next step surgery to get rid of the nerve entirely.
finally gave it up.
I make adjustments as you do Fickle. My Ball (big ones you use for exercise) I use to sit at my desk.
I can last so much longer than in a chair. I can roll waaaaay back, bounce a bit. really helps
Fickle, I took a bad fall playing in the mountains I love. Burst a vertebrae, had severe spinal cord compression and bone fragment in the bundle of nerves that control lower bod.
Surgery involved removing lg piece of 10 rib -deflating lung, then working to get all the vertebrae and disc material removed in the area the docs were fusing with my rib, used my bone, wonderful donor bone and lovely blue titanium (looks blue in my mind-shimmery).Nice strong straight cage few screws and I'm straight again. i
Many with my type injury aren't walking. I am a very lucky girl.
Just messed up in a number of areas...don't all have to do with pain.
don't really know why i feel so compelled to get this out here. My guess is understanding....this seems like a good place to find it.
Fickle,

Wow Roly, you have really been having a very hard time. I admire that you can focus on the positive - that you are not in a wheelchair!!
After the horrendous things you have tried I am thinking of alternatives. You might think this is silly (not sure if you are into alternative medicine) or maybe you've even tried it? But maybe try looking for a really, really good acupuncturist could give you a lot of relief. Also, there is a technique called neurolink - here is a link to a website which has a search facility - maybe you can find a senior practitioner in your area? Neurolink a profound neurological process Home - Neurolink
It is difficult finding someone who can really help, but I think you must never stop searching. By the way, neurolink practitioners can vary in skill as much as acupuncturists or anyone else.
Wishing you all the luck and keep on posting. Will be thinking of you.
Hugs,
Ficks

Thank Ficks,
I saved the link. I am very into alternative medicine. I have had quite a bit of accupuncture. There are 2 practicioners in my town. Both very good, diff techniques.
I was having a session,.He stayed away from a few points he wasn't ready to use. I was frustrated, he decided to do just a bit more.
Put a needle in a diff place on back shoulder area. Felt just fine. Then very slight touch of my tee shirt brushed the needle. Set off a huge breakthrough pain. He went into hypermode...worked that spot and had the pain under control in just a few minutes.
Very strong lesson in the power of these meridians.
He has offered to come to my house if needed.
Busy man....I don't have ins. that pays regularly. I go when it is time again.
Does help. I find it frustrating that so many alternative meds aren't covered.
I went through 5 physical therapists looking for one proficient in myo- fascial release therapy.
New guy a the hospital has studied it extensively and is so good. Again ins. just goes so far.
He would love to see me go to John Barnes clinic in (I think)Sedona.
With so many pain patients speaking up I hope times are changing.
Please feel free to keep suggestions coming-that's how I found out about the Barnes release therapy.
Will be checking out neurolink.https://www.mywayout.org/community/im...es/sohappy.gif

Pain Killer Addiction
I don't know how I missed this post originally, but I have studied and researched the subject extensively, because of my problems. This is not a small thing, and another way for people to be labelled, or made to feel stupid for wanting/needing help. There are too many things I could relate to make this post readable, but if anyone has questions about my journey, just ask. PM me, whatever. I'll do anything I can to help you find a way to heal yourself. BTW Starts, you are my Hero!!!sigpic

Pain Killer Addiction
This rang so true for me, and to be honest, I think I also have a problem. I get terrible back and neck pain and it's genuine, but I am addicted to the codeine in the tablets. I miss it if I haven't taken any and it's a vicious cycle with hangovers where I oscillate between alcohol and codeine. I'm so fed up with this, and your thread made me see what I need to do to move forward.
Thanks

Yay Starty.. you have done a wonderful thing with this thread... I will keep in touch so that more people can learn from our struggles.
Roly, you sound really very switched on and I just know you are going to make it. So glad to hear you are having positive results with alternative therapy.. I know it is frustrating that it is not respected by medical/insurance community enough to fund it. (my personal conspiracy theory is the drug companies are in bed with the politicians in charge of that lot!)
Thanks Ruby, if you get time, maybe paste a link to the thread or reprint things you've said earlier for us? I am pressed for time so will have to wait for a weekend some time to pm you otherwise. I am glad you posted.
And welcome Miss B & Popeye and anyone else who wanders in.. this is an important issue for almost everybody, whether it be your loved ones, or yourself in the future.. information about this is vital.
I've been more positive today and am making a plan too. Having a place to vent has done me wonders. Living with pain is very difficult as nobody want's to hear about it really. Plus, none of us wants to complain all the time. If we try to hide it with PK's, we just get accused of 'abusing' them. Vicious circle.
Very like the origins of alcohol - which was THE ONLY painkiller generations ago besides opium.
We still live with the old culture of 'don't complain, have a drink and pull yourself together man'.
Well we have come a long way and we can go a lot further.
Thanks for the comfort and inspiration my friends.

Ficks, as ever that was a wonderful post. Yes, lets keep this alive for everyone.
Roly, I cannot imagine how you feel with constant pain.
But is your low feeling always with you or has it gotten worse lately? I expect some days are much worse than others and those bad days probably seem eternal. Hang in there, you seem to be a very tough and capable lady. And like Ficks says, you will come through this.Living now and not just existing since 9th July 2008
Nicotine Free since 6th February 2009

Fickle is so right in what she says, especially about the stigma those with chronic pain deal with, even, maybe especially in medical community. I've fought many battles thelast decade, and that is ongoing. I know now I am NOT addicted, and I deserve to live each day with pain at least muted. Roly, you hang in hon. You CAN do it.sigpic

Pain Killer Addiction
Roly, I have MS, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, etc. I've been told everything from I need a psychiatrist to FINALLY finding that I do deserve a bettter quality of life. This was part of what started my drinking. I became my own advocate, doing my own research, learning the conditions associated with symptoms. Then, I talked to friends to get feedback about physicians not just about their knowledge, but whether they would actually listen and be involved in ALL my treatment. I surprised some docs when I stood up to them, and insisted they listen to me. Remember, you are HIRING them. That's all. Get your money's worth. I still look for new and innovative ways to relax and improve my quality of life, and am a different woman from a year ago.sigpic
